The D850 looks really impressive and I think it will really strengthen Nikon's position in the high-res FF market. Hopefully Pentax's response will contain at least half of the fancy additions of the D850 (not counting the sensor of course) as it is quite a big technological jump (5 ish years now!).

Pretty tempting but also expensive!

Indeed. But I suspect we see this sensor (or at least a K-1 II) well before then. Probably closer to 3 years from now.

The D760 should be tasty too... when they get around to releasing that.. probably not this year.

It seems Canon's response is to simply double down on lenses.. petapixel is reporting today (interestingly on the day of d850 launch) of an 85 f/1.4L IS and 3 tilt shift macro lenses..

On release K-1 was A$ 2799,grip and extra battery added around 600ish....we have to pay the 10% gsTax(included in these prices)...the silver K-1 will cost a Motza! IF we get allocated one!

According to some rummors, in the first or second quarter of 2018, Canon will release 5Ds R Mark II (5Ds which is the one with AA filter will not be upgraded) and 7D Mark III. It should be an interesting year since we already know that Canon and Nikon are also working on a full frame mirrorless.

It should be interesting also to see what K3 Mark III will bring to the table.

Actually from what I'm reading on NR now, Nikon is claiming the sensor design is their own.. if so I doubt they will be sharing it.

It also makes me think the D750 successor will have its own sensor.. meaning probably not the Sony 24 or 36MP sensors again. Still thinking 28-32MP and likely BSI like the 850. Exciting!

Should this be the reason why almost everybody I talked to (Nikon guys) said that they are actually surprised and not in a bad way by the price? They thought the price will be with 300-500$ more than was anounced.

In the past, the Fujitsu/Socionext Milbeaut chip has driven the image/video processing used in both Nikon (Expeed) and Pentax (Prime). Expeed 5, as used in the D850, D5, D500 and D7500, seems to support a rich range of 4K video options.

I guess that probably means that the option is certainly there for Ricoh to roll out similar 4K support in future Pentax bodies.

In looking at the D850 specs, it's also striking how much Nikon seem to have borrowed from the K-1, inc the flippy screen, focus peaking, illuminated controls, the 1:1 square crop function, electronic first curtain shutter, and more. Amusingly enough, the D850 even offers K-1 style software-only stabilized video as an option.

They have claimed that before, only to have folks like Chipworks put the 'Nikon' sensors under an X-ray and see Sony literally stamped all over the chip.

No doubt it is Sony manufactured. But it seems to be a 'private' or more so a custom sensor design for Nikon.

Nikon probably did something like Pentax did with the Sony 36MP sensor - used the same sensor chip as Nikon and Sony's existing 36MP cameras, but applied some hardware and other customizations directly around it, such as to the circuit configuration of the sensor substrate. Such tweaking, in the Pentax example, allowed improved K-1 signal-to-noise performance and read-out speed over the 'stock' Sony sensor.

Definitely, and the 2nd edition of the K-1(and i dont mean the Silver one!) might possibly use this sensor(as Kunzy pointed out).

And, when that happens there will be lotsa Primes to go with it!

But what other camera has a 45.7 MP FF sensor in it?

I don't think Nikon can hit the D750 price point with an in-house sensor design. They need a high volume low cost sensor like the current 24MP or 36MP sensor. It wouldn't surprise me to see the D5 sensor in the D750 replacement. A lot of wedding photographers would love to see the D5 sensor in a D750 replacement and that would make sense for Nikon.
