A friend of mine had a hold on his father's photo gear after he passed away 6 months ago...

he was asking me if he could do something with one of the kit being an Olympus E-510 + 14-42 zoom and one macro 35mm.

He'd like to give it a try on DLSR system before investing in more recent DSLR (Hopefully, he'll choose a Pentax, I am working on this lol)

This use the 4/3 system, and I was trying to find a used telephoto lens with at least 300mm for birding and other far distance subjetcs

I am not at all familiar with this 4/3 mount system or lenses, so i'd like to have some advices and/or links to items that would be affordable (from eBay or other ads, such as kijiji in Canada).

Thanks for your help!

300mm is a very long lens on that camera The 40-150 is a cheaper telephoto option with the crop factor this is an 80-300 lens from a field of view perspective on a 35mm camera or full frame digital camera. The 300 will appear more like a 600mm in use.

Olympus Digital 40-150mm F4-5.6 Zoom Lens For 4/3 SLR Cameras E 3 5 30 450 620 | eBay there are many like this.

NOTE: ZUIKO NOT M.ZUIKO will appear on the lenses. There is a 70-300 available which is a VERY LONG LENS and quite expensive for a throw away test like this. The 40-150 is a nice enough consumer zoom - it can be used via an adapter on m43 later but honestly it's not recommended to do so (slow focusing, cost of an adapter, bulky). The 150 f/2 or the faster zooms are possibly useable on m43 but crazy expensive.

There are tons of these lenses on ebay.

Thank you UncleVanya, did them made any third party lenses such as Sigma or Tamron for this kind of mount?

If you go to the bottom of this page you will find more info on the 4/3 lenses. Not all are listed (70-300 was missing I think). The key is that if for any reason he goes m43 later he wants to stick to the CDAF optimized lenses.

Yes. See that listing of the complete list of lenses for m43 - the 4/3 lenses at the bottom aren't a complete list but cover a lot of what you need.

Thanks, I will have a look...
Other question: in my searches, I see "four-third system" and "micro four-thrid system"... are they the same or "micro 4/3" is not compatible with the E-510?

No, micro 4/3 is a completely different mount. The m43 cameras can adapt the 4/3 lenses to use them but not the other way around.

BTW - Adorama has some 4/3 stuff - Olympus Zuiko Digital 40-150mm F/4-5.6 Zoom Lens for E Series DSLRs - (Four Thirds System) cheap.
