Maybe Sony are protecting their position in advance of whatever Canon and Nikon do with mirrorless. By throwing the kitchen sink into this camera and calling it basic, Sony make it that much harder for Canon and Nikon to launch something which can compete on features and price. Their usual little games of slicing and dicing features against price are blunted. A smart move if so.
Whatever their plans, it appears they have a great camera for the money. Sony has come a long way since the A900 days.

Sony can call it "basic" but it's a double-edge sword. If someone asks how much does a "basic" full frame interchangeable lens camera cost and the reply is "Sony's costs $2000 but the Canon is only $1000," I'd think the Canon would win. And if someone has a budget of $2000 and the choice is a "basic" Sony or an "enthusiast" Canon/Nikon/Pentax, the Sony doesn't sound so good.

Not really when Sony still sells a $800 Basic FF camera with better imaging specs than the Canon $1000 basic FF

Which $1,000 Canon FF camera are you referring to?

I'm assuming he's referring to the Canon 6d Mark I that's on sale right now for $999

Is the A7 really that much better than the 6D?

(I don't think I would enjoy shooting with either one, but I can't see that the A7 is so much better).

I said BETTER imaging specs. Not MUCH BETTER however the the A7 is $798 reg price and 6D is $999 on sale but reg price is $1398. I would probably enjoy shooting with both the Canon and the A7.

Not according to Sony (and as discussed by Winder a few posts ago). The $2000 A7iii is a "basic" model.

What is the current Canon FF that is $1000??? the canon 6D is older than the A7I. I am just trying to understand you writing that Canon has a basic model FF that is $1000?

That's a sensor comparison. So, the A7 is slightly better at base iso but above iso 400 they are the same. On the other hand, the 6D has actually useable tracking auto focus with the center point, which the A7 doesn't have. If you are shooting with mainly manual focus lenses, the A7 is probably better. Otherwise, I would prefer the 6D, regardless of the base iso situation.

A7 shoots up to 1/8000th
6d 1/4000th
A7 Videos 60fps
6d Videos 30fps
A7 24mp
6d 20mp
A7 117+25 AF points
6d 11 AF points
A7 -+5 EV
6d -+3EV
The A7 can lock af and follow it anywhere on the sensor. The 6d is better at tracking as long as it is on the 11 sensor points in the center of the sensor.

I was able to play with this for almost two days in a Sony shop in the nearby mall, what I can see aside from the confusing menu, this camera washes my desire to buy the KP, K-1 or even of planning to switch to Fuji. This can be my first FF its just too bad, even if can afford it, I will need alot of more money to finace the 28/2, 55/1.8 and the Sony Fe85/1.8

Cross posted from another thread.
Intersting, the comparison here. K-1 vs. Sony ARiii and Nikon D850

People can complain about the K-1, but that only begs the question, "what's better?" And, if you were a pentax user, for his test shots, a studio set with no movement, using pixel shift on the K-1 would probably have blown away the A7Rii as well.
