We don't have the West Coast's giant waves, but Rockaway Beach is a mecca for surfers and home to New York City's only legal surfing beaches.
Year round you can see folks with wet suits and surfboards on a NYC subway train, and you can be certain they're headed to or from Rockaway.

Excellent, put up some shots...its always good to see different surf locations and situations.

A few years ago there was a BIG Pro surfing world tour event on EC and the waves arrived.Of course not Hawaiian size but reasonably substatntial.Owen Wright was the winner and it was the biggest first prize ever offered on that tour(small change for the tennis/golf Pros).I have a feeling it was in NY state.

I stick my Pentax's- K5/K3/K3ii in the pictured Dave Kelly Custom Housing. Here's a few recent surf water shots using the Pentax 10-17mm and Pentax 15mm. Pentax Cameras are great for water shots, tough weather sealed and can take a bump. I set them all all manual focus preset, with water housing dials allowing for shutter speed, F stop, ISO and review. Also have fish eye port, flat port for 15mm/70mm and zoom port for 18-55mm/100mm. That must have been somewhere near here; New York City and the South Shore of Long Island have the only ocean beaches in New York State.

Those waterproof housings look pretty complicated and cumbersome.
I own a Nikonos...

Sept 2011,Long beach,Long Island...swell came courtesy of Cyclone Katia(maybe it was a hurricane, different names in each hemisphere)

Owen Wright(picture attached) beat Kelly Slater in the final to claim a prize of U$300k(enough to buy a nice bungalow,in a coastal village on OZ east coast, back then).

The rating points were Kelly in first and Owen in 2nd after that comp.

Yes, Long Beach is a popular surfing beach as well.
Surfers are often seen walking from the LIRR Long Beach station on Park Avenue.

http://www.nysurfweek.com/

The City of Long Beach is a on a barrier island next to the Rockaway Peninsula.
The Atlantic Beach Bridge connects the two so I could walk (or drive) there.

The popular Long Beach wooden boardwalk is 2.25 miles long.
The 5.5 mile Rockaway Beach boardwalk was replaced with one made of concrete after the wooden one was destroyed in Superstorm Sandy.

Couple of recent tube shots using the Pentax K5 and Dave Kelley Water Housing, the housing is all set up for simple operation with dials for all manual settings, I change the settings depending on light and conditions. I plan for the session by pre focussing at around 3' (sticky tape lens) for the fish eye set at 10mm for in the tube shots, I have a pistol grip button attached to the shutter on high continuous mode. These shots are on a local beach break at around 4' to 5' low tide, I did take a few wipeouts getting the in the barrel view pics. Pentax cameras are really suited to surf and ocean work and I'm still surprised the lack of photographers taking them in the water, they are tough little beasts..Hewysurf | Surf Photographer
