My step father is moving from a DSLR (Nikon D5200) with a Tamron 18-270 to a Coolpix A900. I was surprised to see DXOMark ratings for the two cameras aren't far from each other. The Coolpix shows nearly the same low light performance, almost the same color depth etc. I was shocked a 1/2.3" BSI sensor was cranking out these numbers. What's the secret? Are they doing some of the same accelerator magic that the KP, K-1ii, K-70 do on this A900?

The magic is that Coolpix A use the same sensor size as the D5200.

No, the Coolpix a900 is a 1/2.3" sensor. But I see my error. I searched for that on DXOMark and got the regular Coolpix A data. That is a sensor the same size as the 5200. I can't find data on the a900 yet. I am trying to explain to him what he will lose moving from a DSLR. He was on a safari and a guy using this a900 smoked his pictures (stabilized vs. non-stabilized lens helps there and very bright conditions).

Yes, it is because the Coolpix A is not the same as the Coolpix A900 (weird product naming BTW).
