Tempted by Nikon D90

I have been tempted by the very recent release of Nikon D90. I owned both K10D and K100D in Hin's Camera Gear.

I wrote up about my temptation as a Preview of Nikon D90. For those who want to avoid the dark forces, don't go there. And as a follow up with Yoka training for Luke Skywalker to resist the temptation, I wrote up the fictional conversation in Nikon D90 dark forces -- Yoda Training between Luke & Master Yoda in working with the dark VR forces from Nikon.

Confused mind needing reflection of senses

Please share your thoughts in co-owning 2 systems. How bad is that? Is it brutally LBA/CBA to the extreme? And am I onto something that I should not even think and post about?

I own two systems. It hits the wallet hard some times, but each camera has its purpose.

My past colleague who ran into my family in the zoo and handed me over his Nikon D300 and 70-200 f/2.8 VR lens. I took 2 test shots and I had good ears. So I thought. I didn't even hear a thing on focusing and zoom when I focus from near to far to test the AF mechanism in the Nikon. Zero sound as far as I can remember. Of course, the zoo has lots' of children with voices of the cute that might have distracted my senses.

May the SR forces stay with me in the planning and struggling.

I'll second that you better wait for Photokina and if Pentax doesn't deliver anything you like ... go ahead. For me 2 x LBA would be more than I can bear for sure.

nikon doesn't really have any particularly interesting primes < 100mm ( besides the 85s) and their best lenses are the zooms which cost around $1500-$2000 a pop (14-24, 24-70,70-200)
i like canon better because theire prime line up and telephoto options are awesome. if they revise the 24-70 with IS, that would be a tempting combination

So would I, and I would miss my K10D's ergonomics just as much.

I have multiple systems and Nikon is going to be added but you might as well go for the D700

It certainly would be an extravagance and of course, chances are you'll always have the wrong system with you unless you would intend on carrying it all with you.
Good luck if you do go for it but it would be wise to wait for prices to drop.
I'm a fan of your blogs by the way.

Have you asked yourself why you would want the D90?

a friend of mine shoots nikon, he went and tested a D90 the other day because he was drooling over the video feature. he said it wasn't as good as he thought it would be but still wants it..... he uses D40 at the moment, I told him to either wait till after photokina or get a D80.. he still wants a D90.

what is your reason for wanting a D90 exactly? I dont get why you are 'tempted' to buy one.

the video has a strange bobbing effect due to the rolling shutter in the CMOS sensor
it looks bad for horizontal motion

It make a lot of sense to wait. I hope I don't imply buying it right the way to you guys. I am a cautious buyer, at least I hope I am. Owning two systems have a lot of implications. I opt for trimming my current gear to a minimalist list without the DA * zoom. I will keep my Pentax gear as is and add pancake and limited such as 21mm, 35mm, 70 limited.

And then I think about owning a Nikon dSLR for the zoom such as 18-105 VR and 80-200, and a 300 prime for shooting photos that require fast AF and burst rate. It is an inexpensive thought.

Thank you all for the comments!

Unless you plan on shooting a lot of fast action situations, that you have no experience with on a daily basis...is it worth it? Those lenses you mentioned are easily matched by Pentax's line up although not in the same configuration, unless that's the "exact" range you want?

Do you "want" it or do your "need" it, if you have the finances "wants" are fine but if you don't think real hard about what you really want and need for all your shooting situations.
