You guys know that I quite like Tony Northrup - but in common with most vloggers, he generates publicity and YouTube views by saying controversial and provocative things.

I do think he makes a couple of good points in this video:

- It will be tough for Panasonic to split its R&D budget between the existing m43 platform and the new full-frame platform which needs a lot of lens development and on-going development for the cameras
- Olympus will have a hard time selling m43 bodies at higher price points when full-frame gear is available for the same or less... although the size and weight benefits of the m43 platform are a big plus for many, so that may keep it in the game

Those are really the only take-aways for me. Anything he said beyond that is pretty much water off a duck's back

Micro four thirds is far from dead.

That said, their platform is fairly mature and it is hard to know where they go from here to keep selling new bodies and lenses to users who don't see much difference between new stuff and their current gear. The big claim to fame of the next Olympus camera is that it is better at video. That's fine, but I don't know how many bodies that will actually sell (feels like the four thirds folks who were really interested in video already got Pansasonic cameras).

These YouTube characters. This one is like being lectured by a madman in a wig in an unkempt Kentucky Fried Chicken bar. Or without a wig in the case of the Angry Photographer. How often do they ever talk about light, idea and vision, craftsmanship? Some do for sure, but alas not many.

In the unlikely event that m43 dies out in the next couple of years, there'll be some bargains to be had on cameras... perhaps less so on lenses, given the BlackMagic video enthusiasts (I don't know whether many of them use m43 lenses from the likes of Panasonic and Olympus?). I've never owned an m43 camera, but those who are heavily invested in the format should have plenty of equipment choices for years to come

Panasonic is a huge company and m43 is pretty mature. Most of the technology going into the GH-5 can scale to FF. Lenses is where Panasonic will have to dedicate resources and with m43 as mature as it is, they should have plenty of resources for lens development.

Olympus has patented 7 FF mirrorless lenses in the last 5 years. They are working on something and 2019 is the 100th anniversary of the company. Could Olympus join Sony with an FE body? E-mount is an open mount and Sony has a really good relationship with Olympus.

That would be an interesting joint venture, for sure. The E-mount lens line-up is pretty versatile these days... mature enough to offer something for (almost) everyone, yet there's still room for additional development, so if Olympus brought those lens designs to the table while leveraging some of Sony's FF camera technology, I could see that being mutually beneficial
