Panasonic S1R Really Aces Dx0Mark Testing

The S1R, a 47.3mb "FF" MILC, scored very high in DxOMark testing - basically the same as the Nikon D850, and better than the Z7;
it is not as good as the D850 in Dynamic Range, but much better in the "sports" test, which is a measure of high ISO performance.

Since they will be using the L-mount lenses, they should have quality lenses on the way.

The camera marketing is getting more and more 'interesting'.

It looks like a nice camera that few will buy.

At least with current pricing. Both cameras and lenses are over priced compared to competition.

Their 70-200/4 is priced like other brands 70-200/2.8.

People can't tell the difference between a 24x36" print from a K3 and 24x36" print from a K1, so they for sure won't be able to tell the difference between a S1R and a K1. I'm not ready to spend 8K for gaining 0.5 ev of IQ over my K1. Those FF prices are way above what people should spend for a FF system. At the price of S1R should be a MF camera with AF at least as good as K1 AF.

Yes, that's also what I noticed, for the price of a sharp f2.8 you get a f4 with Panasonic.

4 points on the DXO Mark Scale isn't going to be visible in the real world. It is sad really. The big thing that "modern" sensors have done is speed up read out speed. By dynamic range and high iso capability are exactly the same as with the K1's 7 year old sensor (roughly same one as is in the D800).

I suppose it is expensive to increase dynamic range or really improve high iso performance, but about the only camera to really do that recently is the K-1 II which got knocked for the accelerator chip. If you aren't interested in shooting 8K video, I'm not sure Panasonic is the way to go...

Faster read speeds probably mean less DR. That's why DR hasn't improved despite the newer high megapixel sensors using BSI-cmos.

This is certainly targeted at different users than their MFT family is.

I had a chance to use one today for about an hour. I was not as impressed with the camera as I had expected. The build quality seemed to be very good, but I was expecting better ergonomics after reading the reviews and the menu system might be worse than Sony's. I was also pretty disappointed with the AF. An hour really isn't much time to form an opinion, but I didn't give it back thinking I would want to buy one. The EVF was really good.
