Nuh, the shutter speed for video should be twice the frames per second, that's a cinematographer's convention, so it's between 1/50s and 1/120s at most, much too slow for sports and action. I often shoot at 1/1000s to freeze the movement.
You don't notice it when video is being played because the eye blends the movement into the next frame, but in a single picture it's too blurred for professional use.
Sports in particular needs high end stills equipment. You should see the gear Canon has to bring along to the Olympic Games or the soccer World Cup as spares for its Professional Services!
