Tokina to Release 11-16mm f/2.8

Hi all,

I've just seen on nokishita_c twitter account that Tokina will be releasing a 11-16mm f/2.8 lens.
It looks very similar to the Pentax 11-18mm f/2.8 - it seems to me that it even has the groove near the front element to support a de-condensation lens warming ring thing.. anyone know for sure if it's a rebranded Pentax?

nokishita_c does mention that the design is the same as the Opera. Was that not a rebranded Pentax too?
If so, good on Pentax for making money by selling it's designs to Canikon users !

It doesn't look similar to the Pentax, there's no resemblance besides the normal ones (that it's a lens, a zoom, an ultra wide-angle with specific focal lengths and max aperture) and it doesn't have the groove.

Thanks for the response! And I guess I'm wrong in my guessing! haha

nokishita mentions:
"It seems that Tokiner's “atx-i 11-16mm F2.8 CF” will be released on November 8. Mount for Canon and Nikon. The suggested retail price is 56,000 yen + tax (mass retailer price is around 54,800 yen including tax). The design is the same as opera. It will probably be announced this week. #rumor"

Isn't the Opera a Pentax rebrand?

Only the Tokina 50mm, not their 16-28, and not this one.

You're welcome.
No, it isn't - Opera is a Tokina designation for a line of lenses (which includes the D FA* 50mm f/1.4 remade as Tokina, and a Tokina lens - the 16-28mm f/2.8).

The Pentax version, based on the picture, looks almost identical to the Tokina, aside from minor cosmetics. We'll know for sure when the full specs are released.

And in which way you'd expect it to be different - given the similar (not identical) specifications?

The Tokina atx-i 11-16mm f/2.8 CF will be the third iteration of the Tokina AT-X Pro 11-16mm f/2.8 DX from 2007, the second one being the Tokina AT-X Pro 11-16mm f/2.8 DX II launched in 2012.

Tokina also have the AT-X Pro 11-20 mm f/2,8 DX in their portfolio. They launched this one in 2015.

For obvious reasons, commencing with the focal range, none of these lenses is a rebranded HD Pentax-DA★ 11-18mm f/2,8 ED DC AW nor is the Pentax lens a rebranded Tokina (the DA★'s optical formula was patented by Ricoh).

The Tokina opera 50mm f/1.4 FF is a rebranded Pentax HD Pentax-D FA★ 50mm f/1.4 SDM AW. The Tokina opera 16-28mm f/2.8 FF is a rehoused Tokina AT-X 16-28mm f/2.8 Pro FX, a lens launched in 2010.

I'm not sure to understand what you intended to say. Let's just say that if Tokina indeed have a 50mm T/1.5 and a 85mm T/1.5 in their portfolio of cine lenses, the optical formula of the former is different from that of the HD Pentax-D FA★ 50mm f/1.4 SDM AW / Tokina opera 50mm f/1.4 FF.

Please enlighten me and tell me what more we need than the focal length range (11-16mm and 11-20mm for the Tokina lenses, 11-18mm for the Pentax lens) to know 'for sure' that the soon to be announced Tokina atx-i 11-16mm f/2.8 CF is not a rebranded HD Pentax-DA★ 11-18mm f/2,8 ED DC AW.

By the way: in the lens's name, Tokina atx-i 11-16mm f/2.8 CF, CF is for Crop Frame, i.e. this is an APS-C lens.

Tokina used to name FX their 24x36 lenses and DX their APS-C lenses. Maybe this was deemed to be too nikonish? Whatever the reason, their latest 24x36 lenses have been qualified as 'FF' and this one is the first to be qualified as 'CF'.
