By the way: in the lens's name, Tokina atx-i 11-16mm f/2.8 CF, CF is for Crop Frame, i.e. this is an APS-C lens.

Tokina used to name FX their 24x36 lenses and DX their APS-C lenses. Maybe this was deemed to be too nikonish? Whatever the reason, their latest 24x36 lenses have been qualified as 'FF' and this one is the first to be qualified as 'CF'.
Hm, that makes sense.
By the way, reading CF makes think of carbon fiber...

...or Close Focus (as used by Zeiss).

Another detail revealed by the pictures published so far (see the upper left corner of the picture below): the Tokina atx-i 11-16mm f/2.8 CF includes a push/pull AF/MF clutch mechanism.

Each and every autofocus Tokina SLR lens includes such a feature, but one: the Tokina opera 50mm f/1.4 FF, which is a rebadged HD Pentax-D FA★ 50mm f/1.4 SDM AW (this explaining that).

Tokina atx-i 11-16mm f/2.8 CF is definitely a rehoused Tokina AT-X Pro 11-16mm f/2.8 DX / DX II.

APS-C対応のデジタル一眼カメラ用レンズ新シリーズ第1弾「atx-i 11-16mm F2.8 CF」発売 | 新製品情報 | ケンコー・トキナー Google Translate

atx-i 11-16mm F2.8 CF | Kenko Tokina

The three improvements pointed out by Tokina are:
  • the replacement of the standard rotation sensor by a GMR sensor (GMR = Giant MagnetoResistance), allowing for a quicker and more precise autofocus
  • a new water and oil repellent coating, called WR, applied to the front lens
  • the rotation direction of the focus ring matches that of Canon and Nikon lenses.

Optical formula and MTF curves are the same as those of the previous versions.

By the way, the i in atx-i is for interactive, 'two-way dialogue between photographer and lens'. It's therefore nothing more than a marketing gimmick. CF is definitely for Crop Frame, i.e. APS-C image circle.

Huh, and here I was thinking CF would, like in older lenses, stand for "Close Focus". On second though, everyone would write "macro" nowadays. Thanks for the info!

Zeiss use the CF acronym for their Batis 40mm f/2 announced one year ago, which is not a macro lens but the minimum focusing distance of which is 24cm, which is indeed close for a 40mm lens.

That example I didn't know! Most lenses I have or have seen say "Macro" for anything above a 1:5 or so ratio. Older ones tend to say "Close Focusing Zoom" and the like.

Not much more than the previous DX-ii version. A friend of mine paid... 420€ a year and a half ago, and it was on sale on Amazon.de back then. MSRP in BnH is actually lower for the new version ($449 vs $499, although the older one is currently discounted to $379).

The new one looks so much more beautiful, honestly.

Only for lenses produced after not-sure-when in the 90s (the ones with in-lens AF motors). I have two screwdrive AF Tokinas in front of me and they sure don't have the clutch. Quick shift is sorely missed

I was indeed thinking about those ones.
