The editor(s) at FStoppers are taking liberties with the interview published by DPR to produce a click-bait headline. No where in the interview do the people from Canon say there is "high demand" for DSLRs, just that the typical customer for a 1D (sports photographers working for agencies) wants an OVF so Canon is working on upgrading the 1D instead of a new mirrorless camera for this specific market. Both the DPR interviewer and FStoppers seem puzzled that Canon isn't planning to stop development of DSLRs completely to focus on new R-system cameras, but from Canon's standpoint it would be dumb to kiss off existing customers to invest heavily in pursuing non-existent mirrorless customers (in this case pros who don't want to use an OVF).

Is this partly due to the fact that the Olympics 2020 is approaching? Professional sports photographers may be familiar with DSLR more than recent mirrorless models and their companies also have collections of lenses for Canon EF mount as well as Nikon FX mount.

In comparison to EVF, OVF introduces no lag in seeing through a viewfinder; this is very beneficial to sports photographers. In term of power consumption, OVF requires less power. Shooting with a mirrorless camera, one may need to prepare a lot of spare batteries to cover the whole game in sports.

Anyway, both DSLR and mirrorless cameras have their own pros and cons.
I can't imagine that Olympic Sports Photographers are a big enough market to drive anything one way or the other. I imagine though that some of the negatives you mention come into play along with the fact that folks interested in this sort of camera probably own top end lenses (600 f4/300 f2.8/etc). While they may be able to shoot those lenses on a new mirrorless using an adapter, they probably prefer to continue using the mount they are used to. Beyond which, if you are shooting with really big lenses like that, you probably don't care if your camera is a hair thicker -- you just want a seamless performance with your current lenses and the camera.

A huge factor when your reputation and income depend on total familiarity and muscle memory to achieve critical timing - and yes, that still matters more than high frame rate! Some people will obviously be using the new 1DX, but it won't be radically different ffrom its predecessor in layout,, if at all - mirorless is very different, and even if it were actually better (debatable) the risk of mistakes would be too high for the Olympics.

That's fair. Perhaps a more reasonable way to characterize things is there is a lack of demand for a high end pro mirrorless Canon compared to continued demand for a DSLR pro camera.

Money talks, and right now it makes sense for Canon to sell both.

Exactly! MILCs for more than casual use have the same problem that has limited the adoption of AR (augmented reality) and VR (virtual reality). Lags of more than maybe 5 to 10 milliseconds tend to create discomfort in a significant percentage of users.

For photographers that spend a lot of time looking through the viewfinder, the frame rates of both the sensors and displays aren't high enough. Moore's Law can help on the display and processing side by miniaturizing these components. But Moore's Law can't do much on the sensor side. By definition, a full frame sensor can't be miniaturized and still be full frame.

I've never seen the DSLR vs MILC proposition as entirely either/ or.

DSLRs still have some advantages over MILCs.

MILCs offer some features more difficult to integrate into DSLRs, and MILCs can offer size and weight savings in some instances.

Get whichever best meets your needs/ wants/ budget.

Or, "get both".
