Autofocus problem with new Canon 70-200

See report here.

If only they had had autofocus micro-adjustment for a generation. I couldn’t find a schadenfreude forum so I thought I would post here.

In all other respects it does look like a nice lens.

I would think they will fix it with a firmware update quite soon, assuming it is not a hardware issue.

There is reputational damage that will hang around the internet forever, and Ricoh can't afford that for their new lenses and so do the beta testing themselves thankfully.

Edit: On petapixel, there is a report that Canon now admit the problem.

Yep, according to canonrumors:
"Canon has acknowledged focusing issues with the Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM at its minimum focusing distance and is preparing a firmware update to address the issue, it looks like Canon will get this update out as soon as possible."
An annoying problem for those who've bought the lens, but good that it can (presumably) be fixed in firmware...

Until that update, owners of said lens can just step back a few inches and crop afterwards. I have kind of the same problem with my Rokinon 85mm f/1.4. The MFD is not great. I sometimes struggle to get sharpness and then realize that I am too close. Not much to see here, folks.

It seems like JOSEPH is quite the fixer. Maybe Canon could reach out to him on this AF issue?
"I want to tell that I have AF problems with the customers of newly release RF 70-200 lens, but JOSEPH say he must alter the firmwares and now he have altered the firmwares and all problems has gone and customers say they so happy again. So contact JOSEPH if you new lens have customers angry and he will fix these problem with the firmwares. Contact him on joseph_af_firmware_shaman@gmail.com"

I take it we're talking about the original version, not the "II" or "III" versions?

It's the RF lens - FF mirrorless - so there are no II or III versions of it. Newly introduced.
