BCN sales figures for ILC, december 2019.

Canon 33.6
Nikon 19.2
Sony 17.5
Olympus16.1
Fuji 6.9
Panasonic 5.9

the rest 0.8

BCN is simply the over the counter and online sales figures of the major camera stores in Japan. The figures will differ from total Japanese sales.

Olympus does well in their home market.

I wonder if they’re making a profit with home market sales.

I suspect they are making a profit. Size doesn’t count for everything.

It certainly doesn't; but since the R&D cost per product is roughly fixed, larger absolute revenue increases the amount of products that can be developed.

I suspect we both wish that Ricoh would throw a bit more speculative money into Pentax product development, but they're playing hardball with funds for the moment, and it seems to be working, at least for the moment.

That's ILCs = DSLRs + mirrorless cameras. The Japanese market was split 33% DSLRs / 67% mirrorless cameras in 2019 according to shipments reported to CIPA.

BCN credit Ricoh of 2.4% of the Japanese DSLR market for the whole year 2019 (see their 2020 Awards).

I figured so, but still a MILC sold typically means a DSLR not sold, right?

Nope.
Would you be as likely to replace a D500 or a D850 with... well, you don't even have a replacement. OTOH the MILC market has quite a few new products...

Well, *I* wouldn't. But if I decided to replace or upgrade and bit the mirrorless bullet, I certainly would buy a MILC instead of the DSLR, not in addition to. And clearly a lot of people are doing that. Whether we like it or not we are more or less insignificant, statistically.

You might want to read that again... you're basically saying, if you'd want to buy a MILC you'd buy a MILC

Well, in my case there is no way I'm buying a MILC, with or without DSLRs in the picture

Actually, in my case, I did buy a MILC. Just to see where things are going, I bought an Olympus OM-D EM5 II on runout. It's a nice, little, easy-to-carry camera, but the IQ isn't really a patch on the K-1 (not that I expected it to be), or even the K-3, but it's easy and better IQ than a phone, not to mention that it came with two zoom lenses. The EVF? OK, but not a game-changer.
