NASA orders 53 unmodified Nikon D5 digital SLR cameras
They are quite a lot lighter in space.

Speaking about Olympus and bloated cameras...

They seem to have abandoned their old ways, alas, in chasing the ever elusive 'pro micro 4/3' market.
All of these are ugly and are for peoples who have a big "Look at me " my camera is better than yours because they are bigger

The problem is getting them up there in the first place.

I don't get the comments. If you had a worn out or whatever D5 wouldn't replacing it with this D6 be a quite normal thing? As far as the size goes.... comments could easily apply to a K1 owner when Olympus stuff is available.

I will point out that wearing out a Nikon D# series camera is anything but normal. I suppose when the rubber grips start peeling most consumers are done with their cameras, however many seasoned professionals I know of work by a different set of rules: usually when a device stops serving its purpose completely. A lot of professionals I know are still using cameras 2~5 years old*.

*And it is encouraged to sell equipment second-hand, sometimes a student wants to have a back up camera, or a professional buys the gear from another photographer who switches to another system for some reason.

Yeah, they have a thing for Nikon 'pro' DSLRs.
How typical, you have to read the entire article to get to the most important news: "At press time, NASA engineers were panicking after realizing that they had forgotten to remove the lens cap."

The article is on The Onion, that well known pro photography site... I want to know where to buy the camera mount for the rocket as shown. There’s an old Rebel I could put in low Earth orbit given fair weather and a following wind.

What an irresponsible statement.

I somehow doubt that. But I wouldn't expect to see another one until at least January 2024 - the same four year gap between the D4 and D5, D5 and D6 - or perhaps even a bit longer. There's still professional and, indeed, amateur demand for DSLRs, even if the numbers are dropping (as they are for all cameras - DSLR and mirrorless). What's more likely, I think, is consolidation within the DSLR range...
