Super tele lenses

The new Canon 4/600 weighs just above 3kg, the 2.8/400 is below 3kg. The latest Pentax offerings here were more than 2x the weight. That really indicates progress! Forget price, …, wow. Even the 1-stop slower, apsc design and shorter focal length 560mm is only a tiny but less in weight than the new Canon 600.
3kg you is still serious, but you can carry it around unlike the classic 5-6kg chunk of glass and metal.

The DA 560 is in fact a full frame lens on Pentax. It is both officially supported as such and tested by users and found to be so. There are official correction profiles for the lens on the k-1 series.

The design is known to be pretty simple and as such it is unsurprising that it is not very short, very fast, or at all lightweight.

Some very modern lenses are interesting and may be advantageous to those using compatible systems. Some new lenses I’m struggling to understand like the Canon 600mm f11? What’s the market for this?

The DA 560 is NOT a full frame lens. Not by design, not by designation and not by user experience. Pentax highlights limitations then used on full frame in the official specs. You are using an APSC design on FF. Spending 4-6k on a lens that is “supported” is just a joke. The 560 was important for Pentax to show some sign of life for several years, granted, but it’s time to call the lens by its name: APSC, place holder.

The Canon lenses are strange. f/11 with tiny pixels looks quite limited. The concept only works with mirrorless live view. Pricing appears attractive; as far as I know, the glass sells well.

There is always a market for cheap long glass...I'm sure Canon figures one day they'll want good long glass. It takes the place of a mirror lens but without the donut bokeh. Somebody out there is still buying T-mount tube lenses...

Birders are the main market for the 600 and 800 F11’s. People who are more interested in recording birds species than taking great bird shots.

The lenses have been successful, the 800 is still out of stock most places. The reviews have been pretty good for them also, but they will not replace the fast L glass.

I laughed when they said they were making them but they are far better than I thought and they are lenses that will get people to buy into the RF system and that’s the point of them.

  1. Yes, it is FF. It offers similar vignetting than Canons EF 600mm f4 lenses, which costs double the price of the DA560. It is designated as FF and all reviews are prasing the low vignetting on FF.

  2. It is the other way around: Pentax highlights the ability to use it on FF
  3. Like the DA* 60-250mm, the optical design covers the 24x36mm image circle with very low vignetting. User Normhead wrote that his DA18-135mm does vignette more on APS-C.

  4. You can buy a used copy and get it for 2-3k and be happy with the image quality.
  5. The only disadvantage is the slow AF speed, extreme long build, to simple focus limiter and tripod foot in the wrong direction. But the lens is a competitor for EF 500mm f5 lenses
