I think it is a nice looking camera because of that as well.
it does have a really nice looking fit & finish to it. and I really like the 'leather' case. I immediately thought of my Petri rangefinder when looking at it. I am glad camera manufacturers are actually starting to look back at past designs for inspiration, as well as quality of products. very nice indeed.

Yeah, I am not a big fan of the current "plastic blob" camera designs. Sony did a great thing with the A900 -- beautiful camera.

I disagree. it may have some well known and well used design elements from the film SLR days, but sonys execution is just terrible. one of the ugliest digital SLR designs to date.

I have to agree with that.

Dropped the gauntlet? Where was it dropped? Both of these look boring, trendy and superfluous to me.

In the case of the G11, they've even gone backwards, as the G10 had 14.7MP on the same size sensor.
That is a good thing. It allows them to make the pixels larger and improve the noise performance.

Have you looked at the specs?

Faster lenses (at the widest end) than the competition (except Panny LX3), and actually reducing the # of pixels... bucks the trend.

As far as a retro looking range finder goes, yes. The only thing out there with an optical view finder, nobs etc. is a $$$ Leica. While it is classed as a P&S, the AF could be argued to be its range finder via the view finder during manual focus.

Practically everything released these days has a new bell or whistle, I wouldn't say there has been any trend bucked really or gauntlet dropped. Just looks like 2 more cameras on the market to me. But, if you're into retro and style of the camera in your bag, I guess it's pretty cool.

What? No HD video?? =)

I know. I didn't meant to imply it was a bad thing.
