True, it probably doesn't suffer from horrible orange peel in the paint and poor build quality.

the D700 has some admirable qualities that the D3/x doesn't have. on the other hand, the D3/x have something that the D700 doesn't. therefore, the moral of the story is, buy both cameras.

The only problem is, you'd have to sell your E-class Mercedes to afford it!

5D2 is lighter and smaller then D700, although it is lesser a camera too.
No onboard flash, no focusing assistance lamp. Center AF point is very accurate, however other focusing points are quite mediocre. Canon implementation of Auto ISO is a joke.
But with all this mentioned, when I was standing in B&H and selecting FF body, I sad to myself D700 is definitely better camera, but I will not be carrying this tank around my neck on a weekend hike all day long

I can not do direct comparison, because I sold K10D before buying 5D2, but I think 5D2 is a little bigger and a also a little lighter then PENTAX K10D, or at least it feel lighter for some reason.

Same here, I've been unhappy with the focusing on my K10D and have been thinking of the K7 if I stay at APS-C and a D700 if FF, went and checked one out it was quite a bit heavier thatn the K10d but the focus was wicked fast and silent. I dont think the VF was any brighter, didnt have them side-by-side to verify. Hand held the snapshots were in focus where for me on the k10d they would have most likely been oof.

The LCD was nice and exposure looked good. Tried it with the 85 1.8 they had.

Definitely some things to think about.

I haven't tried the Canon 5D2 yet, I like the look of the D700 better but the large dial on the back of the 5D2 looks worthwhile. Image quality is probably a wash between the two. If the Canon is lighter I'd proabably go that route so I can use my Pentax lenses.

Also I think the D700 may be a bit more intimidating if it was pointed at you.

me too!

awo425: unfortunately this store didin't have the %d2 in stock. Thinking back I realize that the D700 really did fit my hand well. I am 6'4' and need to curly mypinky underneath the K10D. I will definitely need to get some more time with one before making the plunge though.

Luckily Atlanta has a group that meets twice a month to shoot models and a bunch of course they are mostly Canon and Nikon users so I should be able to test both systems out with some good glass next Tuesday.

We'll be expecting a report then.

I'm having a bit of a simmilar experience with my D300s... but after spending a week in Prague, shooting my classmate's wedding and a couple of hiking trips, I'm having some second thoughts... everything is great... in fact everything is awesome, never felt so connected with a piece of equipment... But there's one litle thing... Size and weight!!! Higher end Nikon bodies are just huge in comparaison to Pentax...
that is also one of the reasons that I didn't like about them. they are just to big and heavy for my hands. too much burden so to speak. and that is just the bodies alone, wait til you tag along your lenses. btw, since your coming back, does having a 3rd-party 85mm f1.4 for the K-7, interests you?

I assume that you liked the Nikkor 85, so you might as well consider one for the K-7.

The D700 is a better camera in many ways, but when shooting lower ISO the significantly increased resolution of a 5DII is superior. As for Auto ISO, I do agree; but then again I've never used it so no bother.

I find the auto ISO fine *except* that you can't set the upper and lower limit (they are 100-3200). I find 6400 good enough to use, and would like auto iso to access it. But it isn't that big of a deal to manually switch when I'm in stupid-low light conditions. Beyond that I generally have no issue with the iso that the camera chooses between 100-3200. For my purposes, I have no hesitations in using 3200.

In AV mode, The damn thing will try to keep shutter speed for a 200mm lens at 1/170, for 50mm at 1/40, etc., instead of bumping ISO when shutter speed <= 1.5 of focal length, like a normal photographer would do.
How difficult of a task was to code this right?

For just $1300 more than K-7 costs today, why not pick a shinny new Mercedes over a Kia or Hyundai?

Yeah, but what costs more for repair, the Hyundai....or the Mercedes?
