Using Canon 40D with wireless flash

Trying to help a friend. Looked the IB over and it seems that the 40D pop up flash won't wirelessly trigger the 580 flash. All the drawings in the IB seem to show an external flash on the hot shoe for transmission of the wireless commands. Is this correct? If so, what is the least expensive flash that can set off the 580 wirelessly?
thanks

You need either the 580(EXII) or the ST-E2 as an E-TTL master on the hotshoe to remotely trigger an ETTL slave. The 430(EXII) can be a slave, but can NOT be the master.

The first Canon DSLR to allow the pop-up to trigger a slave is the newly released 7D.

I use the 580EXII on my 40D and Xsi to trigger my 430EXII. It works ok indoors, but I've found using a Cactus V4 radio trigger more reliable (although I obviously can't use E-TTL so I've been getting used to manual flash power settings)

I got the new Pocket wizard Flex tt5 system and in spite of its bad press its REALLY cool. Now you can high-speed sync or e-ttl fire as many EX flashes as you have available on the system. It uses all the Master functions of the 580 exII to control the groups.

The Metz 58 can also trigger Canon flashes.
