And that comment was for a one year revival.
Seven years later and it's like "the Mummy".

I have since sold my Pentax SMC-M 50mm F/1.2 and have purchased the SMC-A version. The SMC-A version is the best 50mm lens I have ever owned for my Panasonic GH5s. I also use a Voiglander 42.5mm F/0.95 on my GH5s and the Pentax SMC-A 50mm F/1.2 can compete with it. I paid £650 for my mint copy (which is expensive) and have no regrets. I have owned this lens for around 2 years now and absolutely love it.

By my reckoning, the Pentax 50mm f1.2 compares very favorably to all the other f1.2s that I have . . .

On my old F2s. I decided a few years ago that I wanted to own the Nikon kit that I wanted when I was a teenager so I watched eBay carefully and found a nice F2s (a year newer than my original). Over the course of a year or so I managed to find pre AI lenses that were contemporaneous with my F2 and that hadn't been murdered. So I now have my F2s, and a 35mm, 50mm, 85mm and 105mm lenses.
They don't see much use these days.
The 85 is a very nice lens.
Back in the mid '70's I was visiting some family in Edmonton. I recall we went to some department store, can't recall the name of it, but it wasn't one of the big 3...Eaton's, the Bay or Sears. Anyways while everyone else went to get more practical things at the store, I went to their camera department.

At the time I was considering getting a Pentax ES ll (which I eventually did), but at this camera dept....they brought out a new old stock Nikon F Photomic...chrome body. It had the standard Nikkor lens...can't recall if F 1.4 ? Anyways I spent about 20 minutes hemming, hawing and handling this camera. In the end I decided against it, as I figured it I had any trouble with it...I lived in the 'Peg...it might be a problem. It wouldn't of been I thought later, as it would of had the Nikon Canada wide warranty, but I didn't think about that.

Since then I've often wondered if my main photography equipment throughout the years would of been Nikon, not Pentax. I've had other makes in those ensuing years...Mamiya, Leica, Olympus, Canon, etc...but never a Nikon.

Anyways, your post made me think of that day in Edmonton...many years ago.

Your name is familiar..are you the nude videographer at Vimeo? GH2 with adapted lenses?
Sorry for the late reply, yes! That's me. The Olympus 50mm F/1.4 is soft. I sold both my Olympus & Pentax 50mm F/1.4 along with the 50mmF/1.2 and purchased a Pentax SMX - A 50mm F/1.2 and love it. I have also replaced my expensive Voigtlander 42.5mm F/0.95 with a new one after dropping it. The best of the Pentax 50mm is the SMC-A F/1.2. Another Pentax 50mm lens I use is the 50mm F/1.7 excellent lens. I use them on a Panasonic GH5s

The Pentax 50mm f1.2 is the best of the bunch.

Just want to get back to the OP's question about the 50 f1.2. I have the nikkor 50mm f/1.2 AI. Never had a sharpness issue with it. One thing i didn't like was the bokeh (the reason you'd want a 1.2 lens right?): it was soft in the foreground and harsh in the background. Pretty backward. But it was sharp.

On the other hand, i've heard the pentax to be quite soft a lens. From this place: Stan's Pentax Photography
Get the Pentax SMC-A 50mm F/1.2 lens and you will not be disappointed. Another great lens is the Pentax SMC-M 50mm F/1.7 but the F/1.2 is on another level

Don't have the Nikkor but the Canon FD 55/1.2

The Canon is sharper, but the bokeh is awful in many situations, colors are cooler too.
The Pentax is better for the bokeh in many more situations and nicer colors.
Also, the Minolta 58/1.2 has many more situations where the bokeh is horrible.

A lot of good examples from both the Canon and Minolta are from very close up (head shot or closer) focus distances where the bokeh is good and the sharpness is an advantage.
Half body and further, these 2 lenses fail in most cases imo.
The Pentax on the other hand, has nicer bokeh close up and further.

In summary, I think Pentaxians beat themselves up too much and blare their own trumpet too little.
The Pentax 50/1.2 easily stands as one of the better if not best all rounder f1.2 out there.

PENTAX SMC-A 50mm F/1.2

What camera body are you using your Pentax and Canon lens on? I'm using micro four thirds GH5s so the results may differ on a full frame camera. I get the perfect image on my GH5s using a PENTAX SMC-A 50mm F/1.2 prime lens.

I use my lenses on a Sony A7 (modified with Kolari thin filter mod).

Considering size, performance, bokeh, flare tolerance, the Pentax 50/1.2 is in my books its the best .

I agree with you. It is the best 50mm Lens I have used.
