Canon has INSTANT REBATES starting tomorrow:
Thanks for that info. And I agree - I hate mail-in rebates.

Honestly, I'd say that unless you need to crop heavily you really can't go wrong with either. But if you're doing birding and such where you often need to crop the 8MP of the 1D II can be a real constraint if you want decent size prints. I've debated switching my 50D out for a 1D II or 1D IIn but I often have to crop up to 50% and having the 15MP files really helps out...
I do need to be able to crop quite a bit sometimes, and if I end up having to reduce my reach to 400mm I think the 8MP of the 1D II will be a problem.

So far it is still either D300(s) or 7D and from what I gather they are both very capable from an AF point of view. It seems like it might be down to holding both cameras and the fact that the Nikon glass does seem to be a bit more expensive.

Another question about Canon and Nikon... How well do their 2x converters perform with their 70-200 F2.8 offerings compared to the 100-400mm or 80-400mm?

Don't put a 2x on the 70-200 if you care about image quality. Not a good idea.

Keep in mind that certain lenses don't have equivalents in the other system, like Canon's 400/5.6 -- there's nothing in Nikon land that compares.

They seem to perform ok.... with all the respectable trade-offs... softness, ugly bokeh, slower AF... the usual stuff with TCs....

Here's something to scratch you head about:
NikonCafe.com

Again, if you're "money" FL-range is ~400mm, your primary decision-making factor should be lenses... When you start considering prices on any serous long glass, body becomes the cheapest part of the system... :-( Hope I'll be able to get my hands on that 200-400 one day...

If this were a used FA 400mm 5.6 it would cost $2500...

If this were a used Pentax FA 400mm 5.6 it would cost $2500...

Instead its $1209 brand new. Nikon does not have an equivilent lens and this Canon is highly regarded.

Canon | 400mm f/5.6L USM Autofocus Lens | 2526A004 | B&H Photo

I like my 2xII TC on 70-200mm 2.8 IS. AF doesn't work above f5.6 so this combo autofocuses fine on my old 5D classic. Not speedy AF like my 300mm f4 IS, but still the pair together AF better than any Pentax af lens I own mounted on my K20D. Canon owners "tape off contacts" to fool the camera. I don't know which ones to tape off. If I did know, then I'd try the 2xII TC on my 300mm f4.

Nikon pro supertelephotos cost around $2,000+ more each over canon equivilent. Canon's leading in the HD Video Dslr race over Nikon if that matters to you.
