Well, the D90 is a little more robust but I wouldn't take it out in the rain. If you really want a "pro" experience I'd get a used D300 for $950. But there aren't many consumer-grade lenses that are weather sealed, the only one that has a rear gasket is the 35/1.8 AF-S.

But the D90 offers much more compared to the D5000...I'd list it all out but you can just read reviews on the web.

D90 with a kit lens isn't a bad choice either... you can eventually "expand" (i'm not using the word UPGRADE deliberatley) the kit lens into the 18-200VR... that would make a nice all-rounder... I'd still go with the D5000 due to it's smaller size... But all my lenses are screw-driven... Damn Nikon just doesn't get it...

I wouldn't get to anal about the weather-sealing... it only matters for these who's gear spends too much time collecting dust and mold from not getting used...

And I wouldn't recommend the D300 either... in photography, getting a higher-grade camera when you don't know sh@t about what you're doing doesn't mean that the camera will do the job for your... D200 and higher-lever Nikon bodies require a solid knowledge and understanding of what you're doing to be able to really appreciate what the camera is capable of... Neither higher-end bodies are really optimized for JPG-output... Lower-end Nikon bodies are actually much better in that matter...

For a Canon crop body the 15-85 IS is hard to beat for the price.

I'm a one lens guy. Not a zoom though, I don't much like zooms. The DA35Ltd is my choice, the perfect compact all-arounder. It's wonderfully liberating to just have "the camera", and not be dealing with all the extraneous horseshit anymore. Image quality is A+++, and it's nice and compact. With a Zing neoprene camera case (which stuffs in my back pocket when I'm shooting) and a spare battery in my pocket I'd travel with it anywhere.

I'm looking to get my first DSLR and I'm trying to decide what system to go with. I decided on 3 finalists: Canon T2i, Nikon D90 and Pentax K-x .

Now my question is not about which camera to get, although if you would want to recommend one over the others, feel free.

What I was wondering is, if I were to go with each one of the above mentioned cameras, which all around, all in one zoom lens would you guys recommend, or get yourself?

For example, if I were to go with Canon T2i, I would get body only and get either:Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS UD or Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS. Which would put me at $1150-$1380.

Thanks
Andrzej
What do you shoot most often? I have the 7D with 15-85 adding the 10-22 and 60 macro later on but the 15-85 takes pretty much everything i would shoot daily. if you go Pentax and it's going to be your only lens and it's going to be a zoom, i'd go with the 16-50 2.8 or for less 16-45 4 if it has to be same branding? for Nikon i'd go AF 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5D or 16-35mm f/4 VR but these are for daily street-walking lenses.

The one lens I would personally like to have if I owned a Kx or T2i for general purpose use would be:

Kx + DA* 50-135mm f2.8 (awesome awesome lens. Loved it when I had my K10D)

T2i + EF 24-105mm f4 (38-168mm on crop body) or EF 24-70 F2.8 (38 - 112 on crop body)

Most often: scenic, nature, people with the scenic background, buildings. Basically I like to go for walks/hikes and shoot whatever catches my eye. And, as I said earlier I'm going on a trip to Europe this summer, and I would like a flexible lens that could shoot something from farther, but also could be used indoors and on people. I know, I should get a dedicated lens for indoors and I will, but for start, I want a lens that would be sufficient for all of the above. I don't want to carry bunch of lenses with me and I have limited budget. I was thinking something in terms of 18-105 for Nikon and 18-135 for Canon. Keep in mind I do not own a DSLR and I don't know much about DSLR lenses other than playing with them in stores and reading online, hence I'm here. Thanks.

This lens would not be to good for close subjects (indoors), would it?

It's minimum focusing distance is 1m. It lived on my K10D for about a year.

This lens seems to go for around $800 US (used). They are both L lenses so they're not cheap.

I don't care about weather sealing, the camera will not be taken out in the rain and I'm not looking for pro experience specifically but if I can get it cheap I'll take it, as my plan is upgrading to semi-pro in the future.

I saw a D90 with 18-105 kit lens for $1000.

T2i with EF-S 18-135 would be $1200.

What camera do you guys own if you don't mind me asking?

If you had a choice to start again, which system would you choose and more importantly WHY? Keep in mind the brand you would start with is a brand you would stay with (because of investment in lenses) and you could only upgrade the bodies.

K-x with 18-55 and Tamron AF 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di II LD Aspherical (IF) Macro Zoom Lens for $750

Are there lenses similar to Nikon 18-105mm and Canon 18-135mm for Pentax?

Canon T2i with Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS UD for about $1150-1200
Can it autofocus during movie mode?
or

Nikon D90 with 18-105mm kit lens for about $1000

Is D90 worth the extra $250 over K-x? Why/Why not?

You've got to stop doing that, as you'll end up with a bad-as$ headache...

First of all, forget about AF during the movie-mode in any DSLR produced to the current day... even if it's marked in the "features-list" it's not usable as it's just too damn slow....

As much as I like Pentax and Nikon while having a certain sense of hate towards Canon... Among all your choices, considering you needs and level of dSLR knowledge, I'd suggest going with the T2i (baby-7D) and 18-135 combo... It looks like a really nice, tight body with a lot of nice features.... wish Nikon was making something similar, but they seem to be way uptight in their on marketing politics that nobody seems to understand besides them-selves...

Although I'd still go with a Nikon body + 18-200VR as a "one lens-solution"... After a while, if you'll get more serious about photography, you'll understand that your system has to be build around lenses... and not around bodies, as all the camera bodies of the same level offer just about the same features and IQ...

That being said, If you're on a tight budget, a K-X body will serve you just as well if not better... although lens-wise you're a bit more limited... No Pentax has nothing to offer comparable to Ni/Canon's 18-105 and 18-135.. and Pentax 18-250 is still only a re-badged Tamron... and re-badged Tamron is still only a Tamron...

Well I still have a month before I get the camera. Do you think T2i will go down in price till then?

Also, what camera do you own, if you don't mind me asking?

Nothing in particular... Ergonomics... too many around... white higher-grade lenses... el-cheapo feel of rebels... etc... Although the experience I had so far was fairly positive...

Not a chance... unless Nikon releases something for it to compete with...

Ex DL/XT/XSi/D200/K100ds/K10D/K7-user/owner... currently owning a D300s+Nikon and Tokina glass...
