Hey Photocop,

I know that this is a Pentax forum, but I haven't really used their P&S cameras. I am a fan of the Ricoh GRD and GX cameras though - image quality is good for a P&S and the controls are very similar to a dSLR with 2 control dials. They are also small and built like tanks.

That said, my next P&S may very well be one of the Pentax waterproof Optios...

Hope this helps.

P.S. - I grew up in Irvington. On Lehigh Place by the intersection of Union Avenue and Chancellor Avenue.

I recommend Panasonic LX3 - fast lens (starts at f/2.0), wide-angle, and image-stabilized, and compact!

There is no "best". What do you want to shoot?

I'm moving this to the Off Brand forum because I'm pretty sure the best P&S won't be a Pentax and Compact Forum is for Pentax only discussion..

According to me, the most attractive offer in the market today is the Ricoh GRD3.

Re: WHAT IS THE BEST POINT & SHOOT CAMERA?

I have a Canon G9 which has a lot of DSLR features. They are up to the G11 now, but what looks really sweet and compact is the S90.

What us your budget? There are $50 point and shoots and there are $400 and above ones.

I have a Panasonic LX3, it is way better than the g9 I sold to buy it. G9 has a lot more access to controls, LX3 has 24mm f2.0.

I'd say a good ol' Olympus XA with a few rolls of velvia.

But in today's digital world, my vote for "best point-and-shoot" would definitely have to go to any of the compact-shaped m4/3 cameras. Even the E-PL1 will vastly outperform any LX3 or S90 or G11 when it comes to pure image quality (my primary criteria), and the GF1 manages to do that AND be almost as fast as entry-level DSLRs.

If you need to keep it under a few hundred dollars or need something REALLY small, get any cheap canon point and shoot that's CHDK compatible. CHDK is a firmware "hack" that enables full manual control and allows all sorts of insane capabilities that you really couldn't achieve with a DSLR (like motion-detection photography and ultra-high shutter speeds and flash sync speeds), making it (to me) the only real reason to buy a small-sensor camera.
