Well, I know that there was very little difference, for me, going from the 40D's advanced AF with one of the faster-focusing EF primes to the K-x's AF with the kit lens. But that's because I used both primarily for walkaround/nature/landscape/people not moving too quickly. But if I had subjected the 40D to more demanding conditions I'm sure it would have pulled ahead of the K-x. I got to play with a 1D mk iii with the 300mm f2.8 IS at a local football game once, and the tracking quite simply blew my mind. It was absolutely astounding. I'm now hearing from a lot of photographers (including the owner of that 1D3, who now makes a 7D his primary body) that the 7D af matches or even betters that older system.

There's a certain threshold of "good enough" where most situations won't show a difference between the autofocus of any two cameras. But when you start upping the ante, some cameras are just in a whole different league of AF performance. The 7D, the 1D and 1Ds series, and the D300-D700-D3/s are the primary examples of that.

Oh indeed, if you're doing landscape, portrait or walk-around photography then I can see why fast autofocus probably isn't important. The 7D is a very specialist tool, I wouldn't recommend it or the cost if you're perfectly happy with your exisitng AF performance.

My 70-200mm f/4 L USM arrived the other day, so I took the opportunity to take some bird shots. All the shots below involved fast panning of very fast birds, particularly the pigeon shot - I honestly didn't think the autofocus would manage it given that I saw it last minute, pointed, focussed then fired the shutter. Came out pretty well.

Really liking the 70-200, it really lives up to its reputation for being very sharp from f/4 with great build quality. I think the switch for minimum focus distance is an awesome touch (1.2m and 3m), that way you know the focussing only has a small distance to travel if you lose focus.

These were done with the 7D and the new 50-500mm Sigma with Image stabilization.

But then again this was done with a k10D and Pentax F* 300mm f4.5
