Do you just want the extra size on the KX or the function as a grip? There is a grip available that you can modify which basically fits the body well. One slight modification and it will hold spare batteries and a spare card. But it does not offer extra electrical contacts, It just works as a grip/holder.

D700 is slipping off the current system

D700 is slipping off the current system.
Some countries cannot order D700, salespeople at camera shops in USA who get better price find it on back order past 3 months.
What's their unfullfilled good guy price ??? "$1999"

I find D700 better built than Canon 5D.
I can't imagine anyone picking one up and not being impressed with D700.
Well unless you got a pair of tiny hands & miniture thumbs, then the new Pentax K-x is most likely a perfect fit.

New D700 prices:

1/2 of original retail is $1,500
1/2 of what I paid for mine is $1,159.50
1/2 of B&H is $1,195.

If your talking $1,000 or so for a proper working D700 you'd be foolish to pass on it. But maybe thats where the used full frame marketplace is ?
I've never done a used D700 ad search.

But as always when D700 successor launches people will sell D700 to get next great thing, and so it goes...

Me? I won't ever sell my D700, its easily the best built camera I've ever bought.

I am thinking about getting a Nikon D700 as my back up, I've got the chance to play with it a little bit, definitely like it a lot, but didn't have the chance to attach the battery grip.
what do yall think? shall I get it?

When the D700x comes out the D700 will be available for the price of a K7 - worth waiting I reckon.

I'd be careful with considering the D700 or the K7 or Kx as a backup to the other. The difference in crop is pretty substantial. I find that using my old K1000 once in awhile presents such a wow factor in view that I'm considering a D700 or whatever 35mm-frame Nikon myself. I can't help but think a D700 would relegate a K7/Kx to high-end point-and-shoot status.

The main caveat with the D700 is, in my opinion, that from scratch you're looking at $2k to $3k in lenses (new) to really make the expense of the camera, even at one-half retail, worthwhile.

My total expenses so far in getting my Nikon system set up:

D700 + grip: $2150
Nikon 35/2D: $250
Nikon 50/1.8D: $90
Nikon 85/1.8D: $330
Nikon 180/2.8 AF-N: $430
Nikon 300/4 AF: $500
Sigma 15-30/3.5-4.5: $270
Tamron 28-75/2.8: $275

Total: $4295

Selling some Pentax gear (K-x + some DA Lims) and the tax refund helped, but yeah... it's pricey.

D700 as a backup : Yes for those special moments require fast, precise and reliable AF, dynamic range (and recover in highlights and shadows) and Depth of field. Once you work with D700, there is no turning back to APS-C sensors. But those Pentax AF Ltds and years of Pentax use are so heart to beat (seems emotions against logic).
In my case I enjoy D700 as much as K-7 and K-X. Different uses for different needs.

there won't be let go of Pentax for sure, just for the time being, I think I'd be a lot happier with having both Pentax and Nikon. Never a huge fan of Canon, other than like the built of 7D and 1D MK IV...

These are all used prices right? Where do you pick up your Nikon gear?

Yeah, used. They're from a combination of eBay and FredMiranda.

i would pick them up direct from Nikon, which would be new... well, now I can have $4000+ laying around. Maybe I'll just wait for the D700 upgrade..

D700 upgrade could launch at $3500

D700 upgrade could launch at $3500

or launch where D700 launched at:

$3,000

Waiting is always an option when you've got a camera inhand to use.
Wondering though, thats no fun.
I'm 110% satisfied with D700, my first nikon camera purchase.

I'd bet most anyone/everyone here at Pentaxforums has $4,000+ tied up in pentax gear. $500 here, $1,299 there...
It adds up if one runs the numbers.

Kind of a silly point to argue, but I'd bet a good percentage of the users here have the kit lens and maybe a kit zoom (50-200 or 55-300) or a 50mm prime and that's about it.
