Nikon D610 scheduled for announcement...

Nikon is scheduled to release a D5300 and D610 DSLR cameras as part of their entry level DSLR model updates. The D5300 will likely be a successor to the D5200 with is rumored to have Wi-Fi and GPS functionality though it will be interesting to see what Nikon plans to do with the D610 in terms of market positioning against Pentax's new K-3. Especially on the IQ front in terms of DxO measurements. Which I find particularly interesting as consumers will inevitably seek to justify the advantage of an APS-C sensor over a FF one given that they won't likely be very far apart insofar wsa pricing goes.

Seems way too soon for the 5300. I wonder if the improvement on the D610 will be fixing the dust issue, maybe bringing back 1/250 sync.

Somewhere out there, it must exist.

If it does, by now there must be a posse of media who have seen it but are currently NDA'ed. Maybe as the launch date approaches leaks are becoming more likely and will become less cryptic. Hopefully that's what JohnBee is seeing.

Umm, while not denying that there will soon be a new Pentax top-of-the-line DSLR (which may or may not be called the K3), you realise that the K3 exists only in the imaginations of Pentaxian FF-worshippers? The K3 is an all-singing, all-dancing full-frame Pentax DSLR equal to the D800 in most ways but costing less than a D600 and being even more compact. It's the Pentax unicorn, it does not exist, and more importantly, there's absolutely no evidence for it's existence.

Nikon does not take Pentax into account when designing products for the market, neither do Canon, Sony or the m 4/3 group. Pentax have for years produced superior products at lower prices to all the aforementioned companies and still retains only a very small market share.

The next top-of-the-line Pentax DSLR (K3 or otherwise) will be APS-C, as will the one after that, because Ricoh are not idiots and will not spend such huge sums of money to create a product to occupy a niche within a niche while Pentax's market share remains so low and it's FF lens line-up remains so sparse.

I wish them luck in expanding Pentax's market share and releasing a FF DSLR when the time is right, so that it will not go down in flames, but that time is a lo-o-oooong way off yet.

D610, that weak addition of 10 to the 600, seems to be a weak way of saying 'we have cleared up the oily sensor, but we deny it ever happened on D600'

You are correct... It will be called K-6 then?

Can't agree here, because a niche within a niche within a niche within a niche, like the D645, didn't stop Pentax. It only slowed them down a bit.

Or the Q, or the K-01. Both were originally pretty niche products too. Pentax has no fear of niche.

Nikon will do well to ignore Pentax, for who can compete with the upcoming K-9, a canine mounted waterproof orange full frame camera? Although, with their upcoming Nikonos-D, they will have a dolphin mounted waterproof yellow aps-c camera.

Exactly. And they are right to not be afraid of niche products either, because that's where the holes in the market are. They need to pick the crumbs that the big boys leave behind because they're not interested in those crumbs. The whole compact and robust ltd line of lenses is a niche. And so (was) IBIS: Pentax was the only one for a long time. The niche products is what attracted current Pentaxians to Pentax in the first place. If they wanted me-too products, then they would have bought into Canon or Nikon instead. Niches are reasons to go Pentax instead of the rest.

Conservative mainstream me-too products: that's where Pentax can shoot themselves in the foot. Trying to conquer markets that others have already captured years ago.

So, that's why I also think a Pentax FF should be different then the rest. A me-too FF DSLR needs to conquer a tiny rusted-shot market that already has 22 models to choose from. (Including used market.) Currently Sony is out-Pentaxing Pentax.

This 'rumour' is from Nikon Rumours and is almost certainly just that. Someone got bored and thought it would be a good idea to play on the oil issue that Nikon will never admit to (and which the D610 - if it ever exists - will confirm, thereby reducing value of all D600 stock, sold and unsold). To add functions such as 1/8000 or AF-S button would only cannibalise sales from the D800/E so IMHO file this rumour in the rubbish bin.

Now where is that damned D400 ?

You know, even a broken clock is right sometimes. Lets keep repeating "K-3" and it will come. In some way, form or warp of the space time continuum.
