Looking for a cheap & decent point & shoot with a lens starting at f1.8.

I'm looking for a small point & shoot. I'm probably asking for too much, but i would like to get something with a large aperture. A 1.8 would be awesome, but if it could at least start at 2.6, i'd be good. I'm about to replace an older canon p&s that had a 2.6 aperture at the low end. It took very good low light shots. The budget is $250 at the most. I don't have a brand preference.

If you guys have any suggestions it would be much appreciated. Thanks!

If you're shooting a lot in low light, I'd probably pick up something like the Ricoh WG-4. The f/2 aperture and built in shake reduction will really give you an edge in low light. Not to mention, it is weatherproof.

Or maybe an MX-1?

ETA: Try using dpreview's "camera feature search". It will find cameras for you given a certain set of conditions that you input.

Not sure what you mean by cheap. if you really mean cheap then bear in mind that phones are killing the bottom end of the p&s market...

I bought my ol' man a lumix LX5 to take on his cruise holidays that has a 24-90mm equiv f2 leica summicron lens and takes near dslr IQ pics. It's readily available on the s/h market which IMO is the best way of getting somehting of real quality for "cheap" - the rapid replacement of models by the manufacturers works in your favour. The LX5's successor the LX7 is about twice the price but has f1.4

Canon G15 or G16 fits the bill.

Based on previous experience, I would never buy a point and shoot without looking at what Panasonic has.

Oh man! This might be the ticket! Waterproof too!!!!

I'll take a look at the other cameras suggested too!

Thanks for the responses!

Unless you are desperate for a waterproof camera, the Ricoh WG-4 is a poor choice. It has a tiny (1/2.3") sensor with 16MP crammed on it, leading to noisy images once you boost the ISO a bit. Also, the lens is only f/2 wide open, it slows very quickly until its just f/4.9 at full zoom. Cameras like the Panny LX-7 (f/1.4), Pentax MX-1 and Oly XZ-2 are much higher quality options - they all have significantly larger sensors and faster, sharper lenses.

Not necessarily a cheap option but I've recently picked up a Sony RX100iii which has a 24-70mm (35mm equivalent) f1.8 - f2.8 lens on it.

I was considering the pentax mx-1, love the look and brass pieces. It has fast aperture too. But now I got to check out the lx7!

I have the Panasonic LF1, which is reasonably fast at the wide end and goes out to 200mm. It slips in my pocket, too.
