Lens focus at end, motor keeps turning

I just bought a Tamron 28-105mm F/4-5.6 IF 79D (Nikon)
Frequently on the near side of the focus, the motor will keep turning the lens although the focus can get no closer. This results in the lens/body connection slipping, and making a rapid clunk, clunk, clunk sound. This happens on different bodies.
