The title of the article is misleading.

Yes, Kodak has optimized their films for scanning but they are still equally well-suited for conventional printing.

Chris
Yeah, If I recall correctly, the current Portra line has also been advertised as optimized for scanning, as has Ektar.

I LOVE PORTRA. Sorry for shouting! But I do.

Very curious to try the new film. I understand that some rationalization is necessary. If a unified Portra line means that Portra in some form is available for a long time, that's a good thing.

I've only recently shot my first rolls of Portra NC. I love it! Great colour and texture. I'm going to stick around for the new film, but I hope they don't bump up the colour too strongly.

I too, hope they keep it closer to that of NC. I will still use it, and hope that I can compensate to keep the same feel to my pics. Will try to stock up on 400NC before my next trip though.

I guess that (the new Porta film) means I wasn't nuts to buy 3 new ZX-L bodies, and two new Minoltas a few years ago after all .

I've been devoted to Portra 400NC for about 8 years now. Great stuff. Kodak is saying this is right between 400NC and 400VC in color saturation. I hope it is not too hot, there's Ektar 100 when I want "hot".

I've certainly noticed the improvements in the prior generations of Portra 400NC. The grain is skies in 400NC-3 is just about non-existent.

Probably 99% of color printing, even "art" printing, is done digitally now. The whole Portra line's dye set had been optimized for scanning for years. Now they're optimizing contrast for scanning, which I'm happy with.

For what you pay for a ZX-L, you aren't risking much. It's a huge bargain IMHO.

I've found the newer ISO 400 films most valuable in resurrecting compact film cameras like the Olympus XA2 or Stylus. The ZX-L usually has a 160 film on board.

I got two (one with a 28-80 Pentax lens, the other a 28-90 Quantaray) in 2004 or -05 for around $240 each; one was just the body for about $160 at a Ritz Camera mall location that was closing (before they went Chapter 11). I later got a 28-80 Sigma for that one at the Ritz I purchased the earlier combo at when it was closing for about $6.

My ZX-L was purchased for less than $50 a few years ago. I didn't really need another film body, but for that price, being able to use any lens and any flash (including wireless) I owned on a film body was too tempting.
