Black SP

Hi all. I snagged this one one ebay Wed. night. I was checking the newly listed SLRs and noticed this with a Buy it now

Now I sold my screw mount lenses a couple of years ago. The only one I have left is a Auto-Takumar 1:3.5 / 35

I assume it will work on the SP body.

Nice Spottie.

The (semi) Auto-Takumar will work fine with the Spottie. It's your lens, so you know how it works. On the Spotmatic, if you "cock" the lens and then turn on the meter, the lens will be "uncocked" at that point. So you will tend to come to an optimal sequence of events with that lens. It is the same sequence as with a Super Takumar, you'll just find it more fiddly if you do not follow the sequence exactly.

Actually, that is a nice little lens. It was so successful for Pentax that they continually updated it all the way through K-mount. It's a sharp lens with nice contrast. The Auto version was the first Takumar that had the distance "window," and it's a must-have for collectors.

But picking off recently-posted BIN items is the best way to find a killer deal on ebay. That and finding things that are misspelled -- I bought an A 50/1.7 for $20 because it was listed as a "Pentex" and no one else seemed to find it!

Beautiful. I have a weakness for black Spotties. The great thing about the black ones, at least for me, is the fact that any finish "imperfections" allowing the brass to show through just adds to or alters their beauty, doesn't detract from it, as on chrome versions. I currently own 3, all CLA'd within the past year. One for everyday use, & two for piece of mind.

Alright, my friend. I thought I am the only guy who got multiple film bodies on a budget. Thank you for revealing your 3 copies of the same body, I felt so relieved to see your post. I can defend myself better next when my sweetie figure out all film bodies are of similar model number scheme

Yeah, my wife thinks I'm insane for having seven bodies. She doesn't understand that they all have different purposes -- one digital (K100D), one primary film body (black MX), one autofocus (ZX-30), one medium format (a Hasselblad), one screwmount (Spotmatic), one for taking out in adverse weather without worrying too much (K1000) -- and a ZX-M that her dad got her in high school!

I'd love to have another digital body and another MX, but that black Spotmatic sure looks great...

I'll give you more ammunition for your defense. Besides my Black Spotties, I also have a Chrome Spotmatic F, S3V, S1A, KX, MX, & a KM. What defense can I use? (Don't even get me started on my non-Pentax shooters!)
Tell your sweetie that at today's prices, it's cheaper to use Spotties as rear lens caps than to acquire the caps themselves. At today's prices, that's not too far from the truth.

You two made me feel so much better. I have a total newbie question on film, please suggest me a film that you recommend for b&w and color that I can readily find available in stores. I thought about the Fujifilm Reala, is that good? Any films that you like, please recommend.

Besides pz bodies with automatic focus and other advance features, I also have a couple of $10 bodies from p3n and p5, I find the manual bodies in good conditions but I really don't know if they are as comparable quality to MX, and spomatic models. They are quite small and it fits my small hands quite well. I do find the manual focusing a bit of challenge in the p3n and p5 and I think the MX or the spomatic models would do much better in the split focusing screen.

I qualify as well. With two young kids, I am definitely on a budget.

I have multiple Spotties too. A mint one that's put away and at least one shooter. Oh, and there's the Spotmatic F as well. I also have two Asahi Pentax AP's, same deal... a shooter and a collector. There are others.

I won't even go into the ramifications for what amount to duplicate lenses... let's just say that if they made a preset, Auto, Super, and SMC, I'm pretty much on it since I have at least one body to which each of these pertain.

BTW, the line I use is simple. "It is more than a hobby, it's an investment. No matter how much they are the same, each camera is different. A complete collection always sells for more than the sum of the individual cameras that make up the collection." To date that seems the most effective tack.

Oh, and there's the hearstrings approach as well... "Dad taught me on one of these. When the time comes, I want to teach my sons too, and give each of them one of these cameras." (Read: I have to have at least three DON'T I?)

The other day after I used this one she said... "Finally, you found a hobby I can completely support." Listen and learn Grasshopper(s)!

I do shoot them all, even the collectors. They need their exercise. And frankly, I really enjoy the little differences and pay attention to them closely. Learning to shoot a preset makes shooting an Auto-Takumar a joy. Shooting an Auto-Takumar makes a Super Takumar feel great. Shooting with a meter is really nice over pondering Sunny 16. Shooting Open aperture metering as on SMC is a nice change from the more rigid Spotmatic drill. When you get out to that place, the simplicity of a meterless preset with Sunny 16 rules has some attractions... it's a nice evolution that keeps you going back to the place from whence you came.

The only problem is that ... having drawn the line at Spotmatic F... I find that the next logical step... the next evolution... Aperture Priority, is just a short hop and a skip away in the ES/ESII...

Well,..I Just Had to Add My "Two Cents Worth" Her Re Old Pentax Ownership.

I'm 52 now and an awfully LONG time ago, when I was Only about 18 or so, a rather "well off" Girlfriend at the time, Gave me, her SP500, with f2.0 55mm lens.

It Started me on a Great Journey through Photography.

I Still Have that Camera, and it's lens!! Unfortunately the Camera No Longer Works, as we went for an Ocean Swim together (Unintended ofcourse!!). BUT,..That Lens, Has Never Been serviced,..AND I Still Use it to this Day !!!

No Fungus,..Nothing!!!

Over the Years, I acquired a few extra 'Bits',..but after stopping taking pictures for a Few years,..I have recently gotten back into it.

I Purchased an EOS 50 to help a friend Learn (and I have a friend with a Brace of L series lenses !!! drool),..BUT,..I quickly realised, that My Spotties and Especially their Gorgeous "Made with almost No Call as to Cost', are still some of THE Best Lenses Ever produced for almost ANY camera,..then OR Now !!!

To Get the Kind of Lens Quality one Got from those Older Asahi Lenses, would Require a Mortgage and Deferring buying a number of cars !!!,..lol

I have a Brace of older Pentax's, Another SP500, an SP1000, 2 x Spotmatic F's and "My Baby", a Black Spotmatic SP !!

I also have a Problematic ESII, that Needs repair.
In Regard to ESII's,..Beware! as far as the earlier models go, they are somewhat less reliable and they use a Heap of Batteries !! They are Larger AND Heavier,..But Are Nice,..Buy Cautiously.

All the Cameras are all still working Fine,..BUT, perhaps I am Lucky in having a Pentax Specialist, (with lots of New Old Parts), to help me out. I have known this Guy for over 30 years.

Somehow, I think I will be More than Happy to Continue, with My Old Cameras!

PLUS, They ARE a Perfect Conversation Starter, whilst 'Out and About'

Funny, how all the Older and Previous Pentax Owners recall them with such Fondness and so far,..have all been really NICE People.

I think 'Happy' People bought Pentax's !!!,..lol

Nikon Owners,..were always Just that Bit Different,..!,..lol
