K1000...... pleasant surprise

I've had my ME Super for a few years now and this year I picked up a K1000 dirt cheap ($5 equivalent). My first SLR was a K1000 back in the early 80's so I bought one again for sentimental reasons.

I tend to use the ME Super most because of its smaller size means it fits nicely in a large pocket but its biggest drawback for me is the max asa of 1600. I like shooting low light stuff at 3200. Well tonight I was fiddling with the asa dial on the K1000 and I noticed that it went to 3200.

I had just assumed that as the K1000 is the older design, the max asa would not be any higher than the ME Super. Its a pleasant surprise that means the K1000 is going to get more use in the future

you know, you could always just use exposure compensation to get the meter to work at 3200

If you like the K1000 then you should try the KX. It has an ASA range of 8 to 6400.

No, you can't do that.

I didn't realise that. I'll keep an eye out for any going cheap on ebay but you don't see many of them for sale.

The K1000, being mechanical control, will also do ISO 6400. You simple do your own EV comp. Set it to 3200, get the meter in the middle and then stop it down one stop either by aperture or shutter speed.

In the case of Ilford 3200, you would shoot that at EI1600 or EI800 depending on developer and I think only a couple of developers would support box speed for best results.

Absolutely but I could also do that with the ME Super if I wanted but you don't really want to be doing that when you need to get off a shot in a hurry. It would also mean using the horrible buttons on the ME Super

I tend to use Microphen or TMax devloper for high speed pushes like that. I tend not to use Delta 3200 or even TMax 3200. I find that Tmax 400 pushes quite well to 3200 as does Neopan 1600...... see below:-

Hum, there really isn't much scale in the shot. I wouldn't say "quite well" under that lighting condition for a one-stop push.

Here is 100ACR at EI6400 and you'd expect it to not have much scale in the low values which it doesn't but that is 6 stops.

Well I was quite happy with it The 16"x 12" print looks much better than the scan and Neopan 1600 is well known for that "chalk and charcoal" look. Have to admit that your shot looks pretty damn good for a 6 stop push though.

I have some Delta 3200 that I'm going to do some experimenting with by doing the opposite. I'm going to shoot it at EI400 to compress highlights. But I'll need to wait for a really high contrast scene. I hope it does nearly as well as 400TMY at EI50 because the extra speed will help with handhold.

The KX (and my new-to-me LX) are Cold-Dead-Fingers cameras to most of us. If you find a nice one and send it to Eric for a CLA you'll have a camera that will probably last longer than film.

I picked up a KX with an M50/1.7 on shopgoodwill.com for $25. Total cost was $36 with shipping. Still haven't decided which camera to send to Eric, the KX, the Super Program, or the Spotmatic. I'm leaning toward the KX.

Very nice! My KX & K50/1.4 were a gift in 1977. The only film camera I got new that still works.
