Can I Brag Now?

My new "old" toy. It was sort of a "thank you" present from an e-friend for me helping them out a bit. The shutter works I know that much, but I think it's going to need some new leather and I'll probably have to redo the light seals and stuff. It's got a lot of character I think. There's some brassing and it looks like it's been around the world a little, but I kind of like that. It was made in Japan. It's not the black SPII of my dreams but it is an all black Spottie. The batteries for these I can actually get at my local drug store so that's a major plus, particularly since it uses more of them than an older Spottie. I'm just going to have to remember to keep the cap on with this one as the meter runs constantly if you don't.

So, does this give me bragging rights now FINALLY having a black Spottie to crow over? (grin)

Intense jealousy. Way cool.

I saw a pic of a Contax Aria or something the other day, done up in purple snake skin. Very Goth. Some day I'll get a black Spottie and immediately re cover it in purple snake skin too.

should we start some sort of black spotmatic club? I was unaware that having one was really worth bragging over, but I have a couple of black ones. plus a black SV. they certainly are works of art, ill say that much.

Very nice! My "F" is chrome, but I have a black SPII, black H3v, and black MX. Overall I prefer chrome for these models, but black has its appeal too. Brassing, however, is not a plus in my book.

Oh yeah, there are plenty of brag posts with black ones. People showing off their black ones with all kinds of camera porn. I haven't really made up my mind about brassing as yet. Part of me wants to cover it up and make this camera look all shiny new but then again I kind of like a camera that looks like it's been used a little too sometimes. It's a bit like finding a really old Barbie in the thrift bins. Some Barbie collectors are total purists, won't touch a hair or the makeup paint to fix it even when there almost isn't any. Other people they make a game out of restoring an old Barbie to it's former glory.

I'm usually somewhere between. It really depends on how bad it is when I find her. I can't quite stand leaving a doll totally bald but a few hair plugs missing may not be a total disaster either. I found a 1966 Color Magic redhead about a year ago. They are very rare. In the box, mint, $1200-1400 is not uncommon. Played with it varies, but still if I had this head on a proper vintage CM body she'd go for a couple hundred bucks probably.

Right now she's kind of a hybrid. Her one leg was completely gone and her torso was messed up so I ditched it and got her a repro body that matched for now. (I still mean to find her a CM body but they are hard to come by in good condition.) I did fill a few plugs because they were in the front where it showed, but I did it with an old Barbie wig I had so it matched right. She had fairly good paint though except for a bit of the eye lid rim paint was gone so I left her alone that way. Best of both worlds kind of...

I suspect I'll do the same here. I'll likely leave the brassing and just redo the leather and the seals and clean the body up a bit. I'd like to do a custom leather on this one I think, maybe a neat snakeskin. I'll have to think about it a bit first though. I'll want a darker skin I think with some iridescence. I'm not even sure if the camera leather place online carries what I want. Might have to hunt around a bit and cut it myself.

That would really depend upon the purple and the snakeskin, now wouldn't it? (smile) I plan on using some kind faux lizard skin on this one eventually, preferably black with a bit of a sheen or iridescence. But I've seen these done in red snakeskin, teal, green, and yes, purple and they actually look pretty cool. I'm going fake though so a snake doesn't have to die to make my camera look pretty. Using up something you actually eat is one thing. Raising animals just to make them into clothes and such that bothers me when it comes to certain animals. Cows, that's one thing. I eat cow all the time, and I suppose their skins need to be used up somehow, but snake?

I definitely don't eat snake. Well, I did eat a piece of rattler once, and a gator bite, on a dare both times, and Mom and Dad pretty much force fed me frogs legs once when I was little, but I felt truly guilty. I won't go there again. I just like and respect snakes, most reptiles too much to be eating them. Faux reptile skin looks pretty like the real deal these days. Good enough for me anyhow. If I can't manage to stomach eating it. I don't usually end up wearing it.

That Contax looks good, MHO. I'd have no issues with owning that camera.

Congratulations! My first SLR was my dad's black Spotmatic F. It's still a favourite, and if I had to get rid of all of my cameras, it would be the last camera I sold.

You'll be amazed how well the camera (and even the leathers) will perk up with a good cleaning. As for brassing -- I like it on a black camera. My Spot F has brassing on the bottom corners. It was well used and well loved.
