Nikon folks are in their own universe
when it comes to prices and their estimates of lens quality. That is, there seems to be a self-contained value system within the brand. We could say the same of Pentax and Pentaxians.... but due to the inherently smaller supply relative to demand, Pentax prices tend to find a floor...
I know I'm penny wise and pound foolish: I bought a Nikon FE (because it is lower in price than it ought to be, as everyone goes for the FE2 on up), simply because I wanted a f/2 35mm lens (Nikon's go for less than the Pentax equivalent; Nikkors are common as dirt while Pentax ones are cherished rarities)... and an 'affordable' quality 24mm (the Nikon Ai'd 24/2.8 again is commoner, plus the after market Ai'ing, made it quite a bit cheaper than a 2.8 24mm Pentax)... But by the time I got done accumulating common Nikkors (that often are rare Pentaxes) (105mm, essentially), I realized had I saved the money I'd easily have bought any two Pentax lenses I wanted.
