That is one scary looking camera. It looks like something out of a 50's Sci-Fi movie.

It looks fairly normal when you remove the attached meter.

It's better than normal...

Here a H3v (US-market SV) with no meter or accessory shoe but with the Super-Takumar 28mm f3.5 and a baby Manfrotto tripod...

I was given a 1965 bought Asahi Pentax S1a with 55mm f2 Super-Takumar by a widow Lady who also gave me the Deceased Husband's Nikon F75 outfit. There was also a yellow-green filter with the S1a and I took some B&W tests which I have shown on this Site in 'Show Your B&W Photos' The LENS is a 'GOOD ONE' SHARP at full aperture. I did buy a Black Paint Spotmatic years ago in the 1960's and that Super- Takumar was a 'real DOG' of a lens ! When I was a Photographer at University College London from 1961-1970 the Boss let me buy an S1a but it had the 'Auto-Takumar f2.2 ' lens and also a 50mm f4 Macro-Takumar and Copying Stand and I did LOADS of work with that for Lectures and Students.

My S3 sits on a shelf as a show piece. The camera has shutter issues. I was told 250.00 USD to have it fixed (Kurts Camera). So, I'll leave her sit as she is.

Interesting. I live in the Chicago area but send my gear to Kurts Camera in San Diego. I'll have to give this Garry"s a try.

Sunpak DX Series collection

These are from the late film period. The hot-shoe is a plug-in module which dedicates them to a camera brand (there are two loose ones in the photo). All are mint or near, and average cost was about £10 (+ post). One was 99 pence, and the rare and sought-after 555 hammerhead was about £40 (from the USA) and came with the even rarer multi-pin sync cable. The 555 belongs here because it was sold as the G4500DX in some markets. All these all usable straight on a modern digital camera, although their TTL modes will not work.

In the 1990s Sunpak was the main rival to Metz for high-end independent flash units. They say Metz are tougher, but Sunpak are prettier . I have read (unsubstantiated) that Sunpak made Pentax units under contract in the 1980s and there are certainly detailed similarities.

Missing from a complete set is the entry level 24DX (the numbers are their Guide Numbers) and the 28DX which fits narrowly between the 26DX and 30DX here. Also arguably missing is the monster Sunpak 622 (Guide Number 60) which was never sold with "DX" in its name but did use the same module and multi-pin sync cable. I have bid for a few 622s, but the bidding is always too keen.

PS : Hope it's OK to post film era flash in this thread

Ricoh XR-2s w/Winder

An old friend is back!

This is the Ricoh XR-2s and that I shot with in college and the workhorse lens that was used with it most of the time.

The reason for posting is that I was finally able to get the long-dead winder to work.

So, now the whole set up is back and functioning!

There's nothing quite like the sound of that XR Winder1 grinding its little heart out!

A happy day here!

A good way to burn a lot of film fast. Pentax LX with motor wind, Yashica DX 50mm f/1.7, and AF 400T flash. Yes, I know, the cable needs to be attached. Right now I have only the long cable and didn't want to show that pile of cable in the shot.
