It's amazing that a hotshoe was not part of the camera in those days. They did provide plenty of PC sockets though.
Strictly, that is not a hot shoe, it is a
cold shoe. Hot shoes have electrical contacts in them to trigger the flash etc. Obviously on that camera a flash unit would need to be connected with a sync lead to one of the PC sockets. A modern flash unit could not be used directly (even with a connecting sync lead) because the metal would short out all its contacts. Some flash units in the past* had a hot foot (ie with a flash trigger contact),
and a sync lead that was permanently attached, and when you pulled the free end of the sync lead out of its slot to use it, the hot foot contact cleverly became electrically isolated, becoming a cold foot.
