The biggest issue with the 35 S is its mercury battery (for the light meter), which is no longer available. I shoot my 35 S without using a light meter.
You have converters now to use normal batteries...

I was using the 675 zinc-air hearing aids batteries, but the problem with them is they only last about 3 months and you can't change them when you have film in the camera. I ended up buying one of those MR-9 adapters that correct the voltage to a 1.5 v LR44. But really not worth it .. HP5+ and sunny 16 rule is all you really need.

Yes, I use Tri-X + Sunny 16 when I shoot my 35 S. A longtime, close friend has a degree in Photo J. She said that their rule was "f/8 and be there."

In 1980, I used a Minolta XE-7 + MD 35 mm f/1.8 lens to take this picture with flash.

... quoted from Weegee and usually out of context. Weegee was a crime photojournalist looking for news shots, not fine art. Most of his pictures were at night with flash, and he shot from a fairly consistent subject distance, so it made sense to keep to the same aperture and he probably did not adjust focus most of the time either, because he needed to work at speed before the police pushed him back. Then he could leave it to the newspaper darkroom to tune the final exposure, and B&W has a large exposure tolerance.

Neat backstory! My friend's Photo J degree is from the Univ of MO School of Journalism. She probably knows this history, although I didn't until I read your post. Thanks!

It might also be noted that Weegee worked with a 4X5 press camera equipped with a Kalart-style flash that used Edison #2 screw base flash bulbs. I used a Kalart flash gun and a few times used those big bulbs. They put out a LOT of light. Later I got an adapter that allowed the gun to take much smaller bayonet-base bulbs (easier to carry a dozen).

Nikon F one for each year

Here's a few of my nikon F's (not all) I now got (safe for 2) one from each year they were in production. Is this a legetimate enough excuse to collect them?

I've only got the one... and it's enough
It lives with a 24mm f2.8, 50 f1.4, 85 f2.0, 135 f2.8, 43-86 (one of the revisions), and 80-200 f4.5 (the old, heavy one).
And I just got a 28mm f3.5. I think that's enough Nikon for now.

I call it "the old man"... I used to have a F3, but that thing always seemed angry I wasn't out doing professional work. It just wasn't "fun".

The F is no less professional, but it's got a very different vibe... it's retired... still highly competent, but not working for a living any more... more "fun".
Especially now that I've fixed the F's greatest design flaw, the ridiculous flash connection.
I think it must be extremely valuable because the serial number seems to be the only Nikon F serial number that isn't somehow special, limited, or otherwise scarce...

Humorously, both the body and the 28mm f3.5 came from the "free bin" at my local camera shop.
The lens had fungus, but a little elbow grease and a lot of cursing and it came clean.
The body needed professional help, so it cost more than some alcohol wipes and a new strap wrench to fix.

The 28mm has its first test roll going through it now... we'll see how it compares to my Super Takumar, which I find rather excellent.
I keep wanting to get one in K-mount, but someone let slip they're good, and the price went from "nearly free" to "what-now?!"

How did you fix it? From the photo it looks like you have the adaptor on it to suit a "standard" flash unit foot, is that what you mean or something more radical?

Oh, no, just the official Nikon foot adapter...

I was tempted to go source one of the speedlites with the goofy foot (they used to be super cheap because only the antiques used them), but then I decided for $18 I could fix the problem and use whatever flash I wanted...

And the little Pentax AF160s (of which I have several) are perfect for fill on this thing...
