velvia was the choice, is still the choice, of about 90% of landscape photogs.
It's got punchy colors. some say it's fake but it doesn't look unrealistic if used correctly and clearly it's the palate most people prefer since it is so widely used.
Personally, I prefer Provia 100F. Great film, more realistic colors, scans really well. I might be wrong but I think it's still the highest resolution film on the market.
One thing I really like about Provia is it pushes well. You can carry 100F and as long as you don't mind paying the push process cost (or you process your own) you can use the 100F for iso from 100-800 with excellent results.
Anyway, if shooting natural scenery Velvia is fun to shoot, if shooting people or city scapes go with Provia or Astia. To me though Provia is the film for just everything. They also make a Provia 400X which is grained as fine as 100F but obviously faster. I've never used it though.
