If I could only own one film camera, my choice would be the LX, followed closely by the K2. But if I had to pick a Pentax film camera to carry with me at all times, I'd opt for an ME Super.

For starters, read this:

OK1000 Pentax Blog: Spotmatic Mercury Battery Replacements

This should get you on track. Your Spotmatic II falls under the category of ... "For all the other Spotmatics." In other words, the Spotmatic "F" is a different animal.

Best,

woof!
Thanks woof! That's exactly what I need. Appreciate the help.

Definitely the ME. It was my first Pentax, it's why I continued with Pentax. Took some great pictures for a beginner. Finally got to where it wouldn't maintain battery power and I was told it couldn't be repaired. Bought a ZX-M a few years later, but never really felt comfortable with it. Someone threw an old Program Plus body in on a lens purchase I'd made a couple of years after that. It reminded me of my old ME, so hardly ever used the newer ZX-M again.

My favorite older film camera in general is my 1953 Mamiya Six Model V. Folding medium format rangefinder with choice of 6x6 or 6x4.5 shooting. The unusual focus system (the film plane moves back-and-forth, while the lens stays still) ensures film plane flatness.

My favorite older film SLR (you asked two different questions, you know) is rapidly becoming the Pentax ME I picked up last week. I've only gotten one roll back from it so far, and about half of the shots are ones that my not-camera-savvy wife took with it. In addition to being friendly to smaller hands, it's simple layout and aperture-priority auto-exposure makes it a snap for even beginners to use with very little instruction. For out-and-out kewlness, though, it is my Pentax SV.

One of my first shots from the ME:

What an incredibly awesome image....!!!!!!

Favorite old camera

I have a small collection of Pentax SLR's, including two Spotmatics, an ES-II, an H1, an SV, ME Super, SF1, Auto 110 and K10D.

Of all of those, I still find the Spotmatic to be the nicest to hold and the best styling. It just seems to fit in my hands better than the others. I guess I have large hands, because the ME Super is a little too small for comfort, unless I use the motor drive. Still, it is very nice and was my first k-mount camera.

I like the big, heavy old cameras. I know that one of the criticisms of the K10D, is that, at 2.5 pounds with the kit lens, it is heavy, compared to modern P & S digital cameras that weigh in at only a few ounces. The weight has never bothered me. In fact, it makes it easier to hand hold, IMHO, and it feels better in my hands.

Funny, I always thought of the K1000 as a Spotmatic with a bayonet mount.

It's the LX for me. But I have a soft spot for the Super A.

I've bought my partner an ME for her birthday, but having put a test roll through it, I'm torn between giving it to her and holding on to it myself!!!

Wow! old thread revived!

Since starting the post, I now have an LX.

It by far is my favorite film camera. The ME super is second. I have not used the K1000 for well over a year now.

Did I mention there is now a black KX beside a PZ-1p on my camera shelf.

Just a little CBA happened over the last year...
