I want to take off the black cover on the self timer of my MX and it's one tough cookie. I've tried a butter knife and a box cutter (but the resistance was to little). Does anyone have any advice on what to use? I have an xacto but I'm afraid that's too sharp

Try pouring a little lighter fluid on it and leaving it a little while to soften the adhesive. I have used a very thin bladed screwdriver before but they can be tricky to get off without causing some damage. An xacto blade would probably snap because they are very thin at the point, you are better off with a square ended blade rather than a pointed one.
