Could someone explain how the DOF preview button works?

Thanks

The DoF preview button stops the lens down to the shooting aperture rather than the wide open (maximum) aperture. This makes the view dimmer (less light) but lets you see what actually is reasonable focus on either side of the focus point.

I'm somewhat nearsighted, and when I squint I can see far objects in sharper focus.
It's not a perfect analogy, but that's like stopping down my eyes for greater depth of field...
