The cost of being cheap...

Using as little leader as possible to thread the film and guessing how many extra shots you could squeeze from a roll of film.

That last exposed extra bonus frame ruined, half obscured by the tape holding the film to the spool...

And that frame is of course the one that could earn you a fortune if it had been complete ...

Reloading 35mm cassettes and cramming in more film to get 40 and sometimes 42 frames only to find that the 35mm reels wouldn't hold all the film!

...Not to mention the tightness advancing those first few frames, and the scratched negatives from the film surface rubbing against the inside of the overfilled cartridge.

Speaking of extra frames, does anyone remember this film from around 1980? :

Ilford HP5 Auto Winder film came in 72 exposure rolls to fit a standard 35mm camera.
It had a thinner base so that it could fit in a standard 35mm film cartridge.
I guess it never really caught on and was discontinued after a few years.

Ilford sold a steel developing tank with reel designed to accommodate the increased length.
And you think you have problems loading 36 exposure rolls on standard reels!

I never knew that Ilford had auto winder film. I was out of the photo biz by that time.

Think it was on a PET base to allow it to be thin.
But it never caught on.
It needed to be a Kokak venture to reach a viable market share.
Like Agfa rapid failed. Even APS and 220 died a death.

For 35mm film I have always found rewinding the leader of the exposed roll completely into the cassette helps avoid confusion.

I meant with field/view camera roll film backs- you hit the interlock and advance a frame - you have to remember - "did I advance the film last time?"

Indeed. One needs a good memory and deep pockets for large format photography.
Us 35mm shooters sure have it easy!

Hi Chris

Yes same site. When Eastman stopped film coating in 2004 or so they made about 400 redundant.
Think Alaris just laid of the remainder.
Part of the problem is the real estate in Harrow is very valuable so they can make a lot of money moving production to elsewhere and selling site to housing developer, don't know if they have done that, I only go past on train.
There had been a film coater there in 2004... It has not been recycled like the Adox one.
Alaris are a pension fund manager.

Explaining for the umpteenth time that it really was OK to put your XP1 (latterly XP2) film through the C41 colour process down at the local lab, cos you were in a hurry.
