I donʻt think we can compare a used camera from B&H or KEH that has been checked and tested and in some cases CLA with a 30-180 day return policy and free shipping with private sellers. Certainly almost always the prices will be highest from a large national retailer, but youʻre also paying for a certain amount of confidence that there are no hidden issues.

Also I suspect as the FF K-1 market grows, so will demand and prices for other Pentax FF lenses and cameras like the K1000.
But with Craigslist you get the thrill of wondering if the person you are going to meet is a serial murderer

Yeah, when B&H had some LX models for sale a few months ago, I checked with them, and they said they were CLA'd, which accounted for the price premium.

And no one bats an eye with a Leica M series otherworldly price even though it has the same specs as the K1000. Definitely a mindset . . .

I think that was the new in box original price in the 80s (actually I think it was closer to 200-250?)
My new K1000 with the F2 50mm was $289 in 1980...in Canada - Kerrisdale Cameras

I remember because it was the displacement for a '65 Ford V8!

Paying so much more for a B&H Used product is clearly ridiculous, but it should be noted that you'll basically never have the option to return something you bought on Craigslist.
I don't know that I would be looking to do a return. At these prices, with a lens or two, something that appears to have good bones would go to Eric for a complete CLA. All total you would come in under the B&H cost - and would easily be good for another 10 to 20 years.

Of course. Again, these prices are ridiculous, even for B&H. But, again, I've seen reasonably priced LXes, which were worth the price of admission for a return policy, plus the built-in CLA.

You might justify that price if in like new condition and serviced by Eric, neither of which is the case.
When still in production the big NYC camera stores listed a brand new K1000 body for just over $100.

All the cam prices have hardened the other side of pond, of the Nikon FM and K1000, K... Series, style - some for college use some for hobby, I ask traders. Any pickup in demand will harden prices but M42 gear seems static.

Note 10-20% or so.

My tenant rescued a K1000 and two other 35mm from a friend of his who was going to throw them out. Camera works and came with the 50M 2.0. I had no problems finding homes for the other two. Film cameras around here are either free or way overpriced and I can see someone asking 200 for the K1000. I now have a Minolta X700 that I need to fix the zoom on a lens and find a new home for it.

Or a fellow Pentax Forum member, had that happen a few times!

I always thought classic camera owners were reliable as their gear as I have had 100% uneventful CL purchases. I've even sent cash money across the country for sight unseen and the stuff would arrive better then described and usually with a lot of extra goodies.

Of the second hand stores, KEH has been 100% dependable and they always underrate their stuff specially compared to the others.

My mother was recently looking for something in her house and came across a new-in-box K1000 that she forgot she had bought. She never even took it out of the box, much less used it. I wonder what it is worth. Based on the packaging, it dates from the China production runs.

New in an unopened box has it's own levels of collect ability like comic books in original plastic wrap so leave it in there if you intend to sell it.
