Newbie with a question

Hello. I just found this in my Grandfathers storage. I was wondering what the quality and value might be. Thanks in advance.

You have everything up there except what we need

Please take the lens cap off so that we can see what lens that is.

It might be a f1.4 lens but I can't tell.

If it is a f1.4 I would guess total the value would be 125-150 bucks or so if everything works.

Quality should be top notch for that kind of camera but it will all depend on the condition. If it's been sitting for years it might need to be professionally cleaned and serviced (both the lens and the body).

Hopefully the battery had been removed before storage and that it is working right with a battery installed. If it hasn't been used in awhile, you might wind and fire the shutter a few times to see if it is firing particularly at the low speeds. It may need a basic CLA (clean, lube, adjust).

Looks like an f1.4 to me - in the third image you can just see the sharp end of the aperture ring, which looks (on my monitor) to read 1.4. The next is 2.8, but IIRC, this lens did not have an f2 marking.

A good way to determine the actual value is to search ebay completed auctions.

A working Spotmatic, with a working meter (somewhat of a rarity these days) will typically go for $35-50 without a lens. Yours looks to be in pretty good condition. The 50mm, f/1.4 lens is very nice. I have one and use it on my Pentax K10d dslr.

One thing to look for on the 50mm lens is that there was one version that used a slightly radioactive element (thorium, I think) in the lens glass. Over time, this will turn the lens amber. It is easy to clear it up by exposing the lens to UV light, either with a UV lamp or by putting it on the window sill for a week or two. Don't worry, it is not dangerous.

Be careful of active ebay listings. Some sellers have highly inflated ideas of the value of their cameras. One can ask anything they like for the camera. What counts is what they actually sell for. That's why you check the completed listings.

Yep. Looks like a 7 element 50/1.4.
