The camera is a Chinese made Phenix DC303N, which was sold as Braun SR2000 PK, Flexar FF-2000, Kenko KF-4PK, Vivitar V3800N (and probably a bunch of other names). I would not be surprised if some Chinese garage company produced this Pentax counterfeit using the Phenix DC303N.

However, I'm not sure if is available new even today, but the Phenix DC303N was the last mass produced K-mount film body AFAIK.
Good catch. Interesting, Camera-wiki says this camera was made by Cosina. They list the Promaster 2500PK Super and Hikari 2002 as well as the Phenix as similar/look-alikes.

Pentax never achieved the degree of professional demand to make it worthwhile to make counterfeit products. The focus scale window on a focus free lens is hilarious.

I have handled fake leica cameras that were so convincing they were only undone when the internal gears were scrutinized by a Leica technician.

I think it is very hard to determine "who manufactured what". If you spend a few hours on Google you will find that there are traces of successful camera designs that at one point of time hop over from Japan to China. One example being the Pentax K1000, another one the probable most widely spread OEM camera of all times, the Cosina CT-1 (and its likes) and finally also the Minolta X-300. I think it is a solid assumption that some time in the later 80ies companies like Asahi Optical and Minolta (and probably even Nikon and Canon) moved the production of their budget models to China. I have no clue if the same applies to Cosina. Anyway, once the Japanese gave up their basic model, the Chinese assembly lines kept on running, only putting a different label on the cameras. There is/was a vast variety of Minolta X-300 likes and also the Pentax K1000 had a 2nd life as Seagull. Mingca, Maginon, etc.
I wonder if the number 1 OEM manufacturer Cosina also took advantage of cheap Chinese assembly lines - most likely yes. And there you go, the Cosina CT-1 reincarneged with some Chinese badges on it....

The Cosina product was cloned at one time by a Chinese entity and surfaced with various labeling. The Phenix DC303NW was made by Jiangxi Optical Instrument General Factory for Phenix and bears a strong resemblance to this MX Super. Whether this is a clone or a genuine Cosina would require a teardown. I believe that Cosina was pretty consistent in sourcing Copal shutters for the CT1 derivatives and I suspect that clones would have something else.

The camera is actually quite hefty. The only flimsiness I would mention are the accuracy of thread on the battery cover and that the ruber eyepiece interferes with the film door.

Interesting find. It doesn't look like it has a window to show to show the aperture in the viewfinder?

I guess that is a step up from a counterfeit K1000, although the counterfeit K1000 is a lot more convincing.
