I’d want one lens in a 3 lens kit to be at least a pseudo-macro, 1:4 at least, 1:2 ideally. Not that I shoot macro much, but I sometimes like to get close up. So I’d probably second something like the M100/4 macro.

I don't think it has been mentioned, but for a convenince in the field it is a good idea to have lenses with the same filter size as far as possible. In the range you are talking about, that would be 49mm with M-series lenses

A very good point, the M series from 20mm to 150mm all share a 49mm filter thread. In addition the M 120/135/150/200/*300/400 all have a built in sliding hood, again one less thing to buy or carry in your bag.

ps. one exception to the common filter thread is of course the M 35mm 1.4

This lens often gets overlooked or considered ordinary. I have always found it to be a cracker of a lens both on film and digital. The fact that they were sold in big volume at a relatively cheap price has probably worked against it's reputation.

These are two reasons I prefer the M135/3.5 over the K135/2.5 - it's a much more compact and practical option.

This is why my semi-serious lens trio contained the Tamron 52B; 49mm filter thread for that commonality, an f2.5 max aperture for subject isolation and sort-of-usefulness in lower light situations, 90mm is a nice focal length for portraits, and it's a 1:2 macro without any additional hardware. It's really pretty great! Bonus for not being all that large (it's pretty heavy so I can't say it's light weight as well).

Of course then I screw up and suggest a 24mm lens with 52mm filter threads, and a zoom that is even larger, so really it may not be so useful after all.

I've got quite a nice manual focus macro lens, a Vivitar 55mm F2.8 that does 1:1. I can't see myself shooting any macro with the LX though - I don't think I've got the patience for it with a film camera, so I'm more likely to stick to digital for that.

I don't shoot macro at all, thats why I said pseudo-macro--sometimes I want a close-up and the stock 50 or 135 can't get me close enough. I once took my SuperProgram out for a walk with my F100/2.8. I got a lot of shots I wouldn't normally get--handheld, natural light, walking around my neighborhood. 1:1 wasn't necessary, 1:2 maybe. Sometimes even the 1:4 on a kit zoom with a macro option (like the A35-70/4) is enough to open up some interesting shots.
