An article on historic street photography using a spotmatic

I just saw this article and thought it worth sharing. There are a number of fine images that anyone would be proud to capture today, such is the technical and compositional merit of the work.

Pentax K, I believe. (The rewind knob is the wrong finish for an AP or S.)

Beautiful work!
That is an AP, S or K. Keep in mind the image is mirrored. Wish I could read the lens info. Seems it is not an auto lens introduced with the K.

Thanks,

Some wonderful shots here! Black & white from that era sometimes are just magical. Much like Cartier Bresson from early 30's.
The Pentax camera is an Asahi Pentax K of 1958. The proof lies in the black rewinder.

Absolutely correct! I missed that detail.

Thanks!

Agreed that it's definitely not an auto lens. I think it's the preset 55/2.2 based on the look of the silver aperture ring, but the focal length & speed parts of the engraving are too out of focus to read even when zoomed in.

I don't think it's the 55/f2.2 (the front element seems much too big, filling right out to the beauty ring), but can't for the life of me figure out what it is...

Perhaps a preset Takumar 105/f2.8?

The perfectly round aperture has be a bit thrown as well...

If you look closely at those b&w pictures, then compare with some posted on this site in simulated digital b&w format, you may see what I mean when I complain about how simply removing the color saturation doesn't make a picture b&w. I see a big difference.

Great photography, that, I hope the owner will collect the best of them for a big "coffee-table book". I'd buy a copy.

I would too. I looked through his web site and there are more, with a promise to add more later. The whole collection is just pleasing to see, he had a great eye and the talent to realize it in the final images IMO.

Could be. I worked from the assumption it was a normal lens, but looking closer the blurry focal length engraving does appear to possibly be of the form f=1XXmm
