K1000 issues

While out on a hike last week, I took a photo with my K1000. When I took this photo, the sound of the shutter didn't sound... complete. That's the only way I can describe it. A second photo opportunity present itself and the film advance would not allow me to advance the film to take the photo.

I wound the film back carefully into the cartridge, removed it from the k1000 and put it into my ME. I was hoping that removing the film from the k1000 would reset something in the camera but it did not. As far as I know, this camera will need to go for service.

I'd like to send it to Eric Hendrickson as he seems highly recommended. Is Erick's contact info in the sticky on this thread still current? When I send it, do I simply box it up with a note and return address?

It is always good practice to make contact fist; so as to: make sure the service is still active and available, get shipping and payment/deposit instructions, establish potential cost, and establish expectations for time required for repairs.

Did you try pushing the shutter button again? There is a one in a thousand chance that doing so may fix the problem. I saw it happen once.

Try resetting the camera
Favorite Classics / Resetting cameras

Yes Eric is a good person, check the "procedure" in his website;
Send camera well packed, include a note (preferably typed) with yur name, address, email, phone and a description of wht is wrong with the camera
Within a day or three after he receives it he'll email you an invoice, pay it and the camera shows up magically as good as new in a few weeks

Sometimes the shutter hangs up if the camera has been idle a long time. Open the back and gently use a finger nail to close the curtain. Keep exercising the shutter. It may help tp open the bottom and use a toothpick to apply oil to cog bearings. I have rescued many a camera with these steps.

Hi All:

I thought I should update this post. I chose to send this camera off to Erick for repairs in very late September. So far, the process has gone exactly as expected. I received an invoice/estimate for repair, I payed it, and I'm thinking my K1000 is probably on its way back to me. He did a full CLA, new light seals, apparently the photo cells for the metering system weren't working properly, so he fixed those too. I'm looking forward to the camera's return. If the process is this simple, I just bought a new (to me) Pentax MX that I'd like to send to him, and thinking I should send him my old ME as well.

Now you’re in trouble…
… not long before you’ll have a whole shelf full of happy, functional cameras
Have to get some lenses now…

Just received my K1000 back from Eric. I've not run a roll a film through it yet, but after exercising the camera it looks like it the repairs turned out great. Looking forward to sending Eric my Dad's old ME and a new MX I recently purchased
