Ideally with a shutter speed tester. There are some on eBay in the $50-$150 range. Also there are techniques using an audible recording and calibrating against the recording frequency. Search "make your own shutter tester" in google.

You can check the lower speeds aurally. Start at 1 sec, and work up to 1/15 sec.. judging by halving to time involved with each speed increase. After this, I do a final check on the fastest speed for capping. Open the back, and set the lens wide open. Looking through the camera, facing a bright light, make sure the whole round lens displays. If only a half-round or no light shows, then it means the gap between the curtains is faulty. Sometimes exercising a few shots can free things up. I have also noticed that inverting the camera takes the weight off the mirror which can compensate for this failure.

Very interesting. Do you find it to be pretty accurate across the full range of speeds (ie. 1" - 1/1000")?

It works very well in the slow speeds, up to 1/125, above that there is too much noise and it's hard to get accurate readings
