Re. the appreciation of modern conveniences... the big two that come to mind are fast shutter speeds and variable ISO - what? I'm stuck at f/11 or 16 because I chose the wrong ISO and the camera can't keep up??? Huh?
ISO 400 just didn't seem that fast...
Hmmm. . . the sunny-16 rule puts you at f/11 1/800sec for ISO-400 film in bright sunlight. At f/16 1/1000sec you could be underexposing, which would explain the lack of contrast you're seeing in some of your images.
Fuji 400 (like most color negative film) tolerates overexposure better than underexposure. It's not ideal for sunny days but it's certainly usable. After you get the light leaks sorted out you might try metering your next roll of 400 film at ISO320.
