After posting my first group of photos that my dad took while he was in Korea between 1952 and 1954, Arnold suggested I post more in the "photos before 1990" thread (which I've done) and Stevebrot stated that crossposting was acceptable. What I'll do instead is post more here that I haven't posted either in the above thread or in the "before 1990" thread. Speaking of which, here's a link to my post in the "before 1990" thread:

And here's more images. To reinterate. Dad was shooting with a Kodak Pony 35, a plastic, amateur level, range-focus camera. It was capable of producing good photos when the focus and/or depth of field was guessed correctly. He shot Kodachrome and black and white over there. The Kodachromes are dusty, but in excellent condition. I can recall only one time when he projected them. The B&W images are in conditions ranging from excellent to poor. Ironically, I think that some of the poorest condition B&W images are the most compelling.

Dad was assigned to the 23rd Quartermasters Group, whose headquarters was located initially in Seoul, but later moved to somewhere outside Panmunjom. The HQ in Seoul was an old school, whereas the HQ outside Panmunjom was a giant tent city.

Some shots from the first location. The quality of these early B&W images is often poor, showing splotches or scratches -- or both, whereas later ones was much improved.

Dad, who was 22yo at the time, standing on a bridge, overlooking a river with no water in it. Somewhere in the Seoul area. This image shows what I mean about poor condition.


Four of Dad's friends. Notice that three of the four are sporting cameras, and the one there in the middle who doesn't have a visible camera -- if you look closely, you can see its strap. Those guys took cameras everywhere they went, including guard duty!




These next three show horrendous scratches and they were way underexposed, yet I was able to pull quite a bit of detail out of the very thin negatives, I think. I find them compelling:




These next two are in better shape, and I also find them compelling, despite defects.




Moving to the Tent City now, here we have a film crew that I guess were making the rounds. Dad appeared to show more interest in the gear than in the speaker.

A few pics from a trip to the fair, shot with a Pentax MZ5 and a Vivitar 35mm lens and a red filter. Fomapan 400 film exposed at ASA 800 and developed in Kodak D-76. I love that 'dark sky' look.

Someone had left it in the back of that jeep, I think while they were at supper. It looked like it was in a good mood, but I sure wasn't going to say hi to it.
